Palin pick means SNL is the real winner

Almost a week has passed since John McCain announced that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin would be his vice president. And now that the dust has settled, it has become increasingly clear on who benefits the most from the addition of Palin to the ticket.

It isn't the extreme-right, which has been enthusiastic about Palin's track record on abortion, gun control and the development of offshore drilling.

It isn't female voters who may be apt to vote for Palin based on the fact that she is a woman, even though they may not see eye-to-eye with Palin on policy and social issues.

It's Lorne Michaels.

The Saturday Night Live creator isn't going to have to do much thinking when it comes to casting Palin on the show. Weekend Update mainstay and leading lady of 30 Rock Tina Fey is a spitting image of the governor.

The obvious comparisons are starting to pop up across the blogosphere. Defamer, the Hollywood arm of the Gawker blog network, pits Palin's viewpoints and sets them alongside quotes uttered by Fey's character, Liz Lemon, on 30 Rock.

Over at The Pajama Pundit, the author writes: "If Lorne Michaels doesn't hire Tina Fey as a part-time cast member on SNL to do an impression of Sarah Palin leading up to the election, he's crazy."

Not since Darrell Hammond's take on Bill Clinton has Saturday Night Live seen such a dead-ringing comparison between an actor and a political figure. And with Fey's character on 30 Rock - a liberal-leaning spitfire who works for NBC - naturally containing some of more assertive speaking characteristics shared by Palin, the transition should be a smooth one.
