DENVER -- Barack Obama's presidential campaign is taking advantage of John McCain's comments about wanting to renegotiate the Colorado River Compact, releasing a new radio ad Tuesday blasting the Republican nominee on the controversial issue. "John McCain supports George Bush's failed economic policies and he wants to take our water, too? That's not the change we need," an announcer says in the ad.
Barack Obama's presidential campaign is finally taking advantage of John McCain's comments about wanting to renegotiate the Colorado River Compact, releasing a new radio ad Tuesday blasting McCain on the issue.
"John McCain supports George Bush's failed economic policies and he wants to take our water, too? That's not the change we need," an announcer says in the ad.
The ad began running in Colorado on Tuesday, said Obama spokesperson Matt Chandler. Chandler declined to say where the ad is running and the size of the ad buy.
The ad references comments McCain made to the Pueblo Chieftain in August saying the 86-year-old compact "obviously needs to be renegotiated over time amongst the interested parties."
Newspapers and Colorado politicians from both parties assailed McCain for his comments. McCain later backed away from that stance in a letter to U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Loveland), saying his words had been "mistakenly construed."
A McCain spokesperson did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment Tuesday afternoon.
