Barack Obama borrowed parts of this Tom Toles cartoon while on the campaign trail.: (www.WashingtonPost.com)"Maybe what they're saying is, 'Watch out George Bush,'" Obama said as he campaigned in Terre Haute, Ind. on Saturday. "Except for economic policies, and tax policies, and energy policies, and health care policies, and education policies, and Karl Rove-style politics -- except for all that, we're really going to bring change to Washington! We’re really going to shake things up!"
Great line. Too bad it came from Friday's cartoon by Washington Post cartoonist Tom Toles.
Asked about using the borrowed line, Obama spokeswoman Jen Psaki told the Boston Globe Obama used Toles's lines unwittingly, after having them pointed out by a friend who didn't mention the source.
"This came to Senator Obama from a friend who didn't indicate where he had gotten it from, but the questions it raises certainly continue to ring true," Psaki told the Boston Globe. "He did not know it was from a cartoon and now that he does he will certainly credit the cartoonist."
Obama used the line again while campaigning today in Michigan, as well as during an interview on Countdown with Keith Olbermann, both times properly crediting Tom Toles from The Washington Post.
