Pat McCarthy (D-Tacoma) has won the Pierce County executive race, the Tacoma News-Tribune reports, with second place finisher Shawn Bunney (R-Bonney Lake) conceding the race Thursday night.
The election marks two firsts in the executive race. McCarthy, the Pierce County auditor, prevailed in the inaugural ranked choice voting ballot that allowed voters to include their second and third choices. She also becomes the first female executive of the state's second largest county.
"I’m thankful to the voters of Pierce County to have confidence in me to be the first woman county executive," McCarthy told the TNT. "These are challenging times. But I look forward to some exciting opportunities for us to do some good things in Pierce county."
