Asked the condition of his health, Martin said, “I’m here, aren’t I? My health is wonderful. Every day is a thrill.”And what is the focus of your campaign?
In a news release, Martin said he will not be running against anyone. He said the real trouble-maker in the world is Satan.Let's just start the debates. Right now. Immediately.

No Bitch-Ass-Ness: You'll Get No Money From Me, Mr. Conway

(Don't know what the hell I'm talking about? Urban up.)

After much anguish, Harry Reid made sure that the public option was in the Senate bill. Give to Harry Reid.

60 House Democrats asked for permission to vote against the House Bill, 20 more than the number that would make the bill fail. The bill passed. Give to Speaker Pelosi and her whip, James Clyburn.

The DCCC delivered not one, but two special elections that we had no goddamn reason to win in Bill Owens and Scott Murphy. They both voted for the House Bill. Give to the DCCC.

Mitch and Trey make a deal?

The pure entertainment over in the Republican Senate primary of Kentucky just got even more fun. In the aftermath of the interesting meeting uncovered between Mitch McConnell and Rand Paul, comes this juicy paragraph from a Wall Street Journal story about the rift in the Republican Party between the Teabaggers and Republican leadership (i.e. Mitch McConnell, because he's such a Commie happily riding on the Obama Train to tyranny) :
Mr. Grayson said he was confident that primary voters in Kentucky know him as a "true conservative." He said he speaks regularly with Mr. McConnell, but that he is not shy about criticizing him, particularly on the financial system bailout.

LHL and CJ unload on spineless Ben Chandler

From his hometown Herald-Leader's editorial:
Chandler's disappointing vote

We're not sure what Chandler hoped to accomplish politically with his vote. He endorsed Obama and voted for a cap-and-trade allowance system to reduce the heat-trapping gases that are causing climate change. The energy vote, opposed by coal interests, was probably more politically risky than this one. And he's not going to get right with the tea baggers no matter what he does.

This is no time to let the perfect become the enemy of the good. We would have rather seen Chandler stand up for positive change rather than hunker down with Kentucky's House Republicans who reflexively vote against anything Obama wants, even Rep.

Polls, polls, polls...

Some crosstab madness from the SUSA polling goodness yesterday:

First, on the Republican primary side

Rand Paul- 35
Trey Grayson- 32
Other/Undecided- 33

Gender-wise, Paul leads 40-32 among Male Liberty Patriots, Grayson leads 33-29 among females.

Among young voters, Paul had a crazy-high advantage in the last SUSA poll, but now trails 43-40. Odd.

Among conservatives (69% of respondents), Paul leads 39-31, but is losing huge among moderates. This falls more in line with what I think will happen (the last SUSA was the opposite, if I recall correctly), as Rand Paul is much much much more conservative (both economically and socially) than Trey Grayson.

Regionally, Grayson takes Western KY and Louisville, while Paul takes Eastern, Central and Northern KY.

Governor Farmer?

The biggest rumor in the Bluegrass got some more gasoline on the fire from the AP today:
FRANKFORT, Ky. -- University of Kentucky basketball icon Richie Farmer said Tuesday he is considering a run for governor on the Republican ticket.

The shooting guard on the legendary 1992 UK team dubbed "The Unforgettables" said Tuesday he has been "in discussions" about a possible run.

"I'm looking at options and seeing what people are saying," Farmer said. "We may look at doing a poll a little later on."If this happens, I think its fair to say that Steve Beshear is in big big big trouble.

On the bright side, this will at least be endlessly entertaining for us...

KY Senate race FEC reports are out

Jake has the whole lowdown here.

Some highlights:

  • Grayson and Paul are in a virtual dead heat in fundraising.
  • Almost all of Rand Paul's donations are from out of state. From White Male Liberty Patriots.
  • The entire Republican establishment is lining up behind Grayson.
  • Dan Mongiardo is dead last in fundraising, and is $1.2 million in debt. Which obviously means that he's totally kicking ass.

I'll pour through em soon and see if there's anything else of note, but check out the whole thing for now.

Recollections of a Fundraiser of Yore and Thoughts on Son-of-a-Bitchgate

Dan Mongiardo’s fake puritanical outrage over Attorney General Jack Conway’s recent, shocking use of profanity at the Fancy Farm picnic brought back memories for me of a Democratic State Senate Caucus fundraiser that I and several other UK College Democrats attended some years ago. As you will remember, this was two offices ago for Dan Mongiardo, back when he was still a lowly state senator who had recently lost the last race for US Senate against Jim Bunning, and as such he was expected to allow the rest of the caucus and the attendees at the fundraiser to bask in the glow of his political fame.

Beshears will be special guests for Webb fund-raiser

FRANKFORT -- Gov. Steve Beshear and first lady Jane Beshear will be special guests Friday at a Frankfort fund-raiser for state Rep. Robin Webb's Democratic campaign for a vacant state Senate seat in northeastern Kentucky. The Beshears are listed on an invitation sent out Wednesday by the Kentucky Democratic Party. The fundraiser will be from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday at Investors Heritage in downtown Frankfort. Webb, a Grayson attorney, is facing Republican Jack Ditty, a Greeunp County dermatologist, in an Aug. 25 special election for the 18th Senate District seat. It was left vacant last month when Republican incumbent Charlie Borders resigned to take a state job with the Public Service Commission.

Fancy Farm 2009: Plastic Spoons and Loons

It was great to be back at Fancy Farm on Saturday, the one-of-a-kind political circus where Kentucky politics tends to show its best and worst aspects every year.

This year's "episode" was largely a showcase of fresh blood from both parties. On the Republican side we had youngster Trey Grayson taking over the reigns from Jim Bunning (though still blatantly puppeted by ole Mitch). For the Democrats, the two youngsters were the squeaky clean MySpace Batman and Ken doll Jack Conway, and the eyebrow waxing hetero-hunting-coal-doctor Dan Mongiardo. Whatever the outcome of the 2010 Senate race, we're pretty much assured that at least 2 of these 3 will be among their party's leaders for the next generation.
