Incumbents facing tough re-elections overwhelmingly vote no on bailout

Voting no was the safe move.

Members of Congress in tough re-election battles apparently decided that it was safer to vote against the $700 billion Wall Street bailout plan than to vote for it.

There are 41 incumbent House members on Politicker.com's The Pindell Report of the nation's most competitive House races. Of that group 31 voted against the bailout, possibly proof that that a yes vote might be politically toxic just a little over a month from Election Day. Of the four House members running for the Senate only Maine's Tom Allen voted for in favor.

The vote was described by some members of Congress as the most important since the one authorizing force in Iraq. The heightened importance of the issue lead to two different presidential addresses in less than a week. President Bush and Congressional leaders urged passage of some sort of bailout bill for fear that inaction would lead the country to another Great Depression.

To be sure, there are many reasons besides election season politics to vote against the bailout. Even Congressional leaders admitted on the House floor that this was less than a perfect bill for any member. Conservatives said the bill would was basically socialism. Liberals said the bill didn't do enough to protect the Middle Class.

But Wall Street registered their displeasure with the largest sell off in the history of the Dow Jones Industrial Average.

The ten House members who may win a courage award, but lose re-election include: Paul Kanjorski (D-Penn.), Tom Mahoney (D-Fla.), Jon Porter (R-Nev.), Jerry McNerney (D-Calif.), Chris Shays (R-Conn.), Bill Foster (D-Ill.), Jim Marshall (D-Ga.), Mark Kirk (D-Ill.), Jim McCrery (R-La.), and Patrick Murphy (D-Penn.).

While we don't know in November what voters will see as the right move today, clearly if members were on the fence they felt the better move was to vote no on this first round. It isn't over yet.

No to Bailout

The overwhelming response of voters against the bailout stands in contrast to the opinions within Congress. The bozos in the dome asume we are to ignorant to know the consequences of no bailout. Hpow insulting. Vote tham all out!!!!!!

Competitive Districts, No Bailout

Jerry McNerney (D-Calif-11th)was a hero for defeating Pombo in 2006, but lost me when he voted yes on FISA renewal with Telecom immunity. His yes vote on the bailout was really stupid considering how close his re-election race will be in a very purple district. I say sacrifice him and Pelosi to the nearest Republican or Independent and pick-off a few Republicans elsewhere.

Patrick Murphy-Bailout

There was nothing courageous about Patrick Murphy voting in favor of the bailout bill. He is, and always has been, nothing more than a puppet for the DNC. When Pelosi tells him to jump, he asks how high.

There has never been a spending bill he didn't like; he took time to write/promote a book all about "me;" and, has spent the last few months a the head cheerleader for Obama. Patrick Murphy is more interested in Patrick Murphy than the interests of the constituents who pay his salary.

Check car insurance cover, rugby fans told

Fans heading to France for the kick off of the Rugby World Cup need to ensure their
car insurance policies are up-to-date before they hit the road, the
Association of British Insurers (ABI) has warned.

According to the ABI, anyone
travelling across the channel to France needs to check that their policies cover them for the entire duration of their stay in the country.

"Check your
insurance to see whether or not
the level of your UK cover extends to cover you in France," a spokesperson for the ABI said.

"What you will be covered for is the
minimum legal requirement in France, so if you
drive to France and don't tell
your insurer, you're not breaking
the law.

"But you may not be covered if your
vehicle is stolen and you may not be covered if you're involved in an accident and you need to get it repaired," they added.

ABI also warned motorists to ensure they are covered in the event of an
accident or theft while travelling to matches.

Foreign and Commonwealth Office statistics show drive driving is also a potential accident risk when abroad. Over 40 per cent of people admitted drinking 'much more' when on holiday than they usually do at home.
