CARTOONISTS KNOW WHO THE JOKER REALLY IS
With a big-budget movie like The Dark Knight being released and breaking records, you knew cartoonists couldn't help giving their opinion as to who they really think the Joker is.
Jim Borgman at the Cincinnati Enquirer reveals that the Joker is secretly Senator Joe Lieberman (D-Conn).
But wait, it's really Al Gore, as revealed by Gary Varvel of the Indianapolis Star.
Steve Lait of the Oakland Tribune thinks that George W. Bush, pretending to be Batman, is secretly the Joker.
A couple of cartoonists managed to use Batman as a tool for a good cartoon.
Clay Benett of the Chattanogga Times Free Press shows George W. Bush, after all these years, still isn't prepared to wear the batsuit.
Gas prices are even affecting boy billionaire Bruce Wayne in Nate Beeler's cartoon for the Washington Examiner.
And Rob Rogers of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette want's us to know why Batman turned into the "Dark Knight."
Here's a Batman cartoon I did a couple of years ago while in school that one of my professors enjoyed so much, he decided to swipe, redraw, and use it in his own local newspaper.
SENATOR LEAHY'S BATMAN CAMEO
While on the subject of Batman, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-VT) had a brief cameo in the 'Dark Knight' where he came face-to-face with the Joker while attending a fundraiser for Gotham District Attorney Harvey Dent.
Joke's on us: Senator Leahy (left background) in the new Batman movie 'The Dark Knight.'Apparently, Leahy has been a Batman fan since he was a kid, and he became the future Senator's favorite super hero because "he has no superpowers. He had to use his own brains and his own knowledge. He could have had an entirely different life. As a billionaire, he could have done anything."
And don't think he's pocketing that big hollywood dough. Leahy donates all Batman earnings to the children's wing of the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montpelier. The library is also the beneficiary of the proceeds from the reception and premiere showing of the movie tonight, which is sold out for $50 a ticket.
Leahy did a voice-over for the part of a governor in the Batman cartoon series, and also had a nonspeaking cameo in the 1997 film Batman & Robin.
However, he was not responsible for the casting of George Clooney or the nipples on the batsuit.
LA TIMES LOVES EDITORIAL CARTOONISTS SO MUCH THEY DON'T HAVE ONE
James Rainey at the Los Angeles Times wrote an article about the decline of staff editorial cartoonists in the country, even as the New Yorker delivered proof that a single, well-drawn image can bring attention, debate, and most importantly readers to any publication.
Rainey used an editorial cartoon by the Seattle Post-Intelligencer's editorial cartoonist David Horsey to accompany the piece. He would've asked the LA Times staff editorial cartoonist, but they don't have one. Neither do the Tribune's other major metro newspapers, the Chicago Tribune and the Baltimore Sun.

Jihad!: A reader's reaction to a cartoon by Clay JonesClay Jones over at the Free Lance-Star did a cartoon in reaction to the New Yorker controversy where he compared Barack Obama's supporters to the islamic extremists that were upset over the cartoons of the Islamic prophet Muhammad published in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten back in 2005.
Turns out certain readers didn't appreciate his take. One even changed the cartoon and mailed it back to him anonymously.
MORE CARTOONISTS FIND THEMSELVES UNEMPLOYED
Speaking off staff editorial cartooning jobs, the last week has brought about three new causalities to our already decimated industry.
Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Don Wright accepted a buyout from the Palm Beach Post. Don has been with the paper since 1983, and was one of 300 hundred employees who applied for a buyout.
The worst part is even after the 300 buyouts, the Palm Beach Post will face addition layoffs. Sheesh.
Dwayne Powell of the Raleigh News & Observer resigned after being laid off from the newspaper after almost thirty years. Daryl Cagle reports on his blog that he had been offered a freelance job of drawing three local cartoons a week, but turned it down and will continue to draw national cartoons in syndication.
Finally, Honolulu Advertiser staff cartoonist Dick Adair is reportedly targeted as part of the newspaper's seven percent workforce contraction. Apparently, 54 job cuts were initially targeted, but Gannett "decided it can't get rid of all of them," according to Wayne Cahill, administrative officer of the Hawaii Newspaper Guild. But Adair is still facing the loss of his job.

That’s fear. They know they can’t win on the issues, so the last resort they have is race and fear.”
