Changes likely at the top for KDP

Leadership in the Kentucky Democratic Party is likely to change over the coming months, with Chairwoman Jennifer Moore reportedly aiming to relinquish her role at the top.

The Louisville Courier-Journal reports Moore told Gov. Steve Beshear (D-Lexington) she hoped to return to full-time law practice after this year’s general election. Beshear’s office reportedly said an “announcement is forthcoming” about the situation, though left it up to Moore to choose when to step down. A western Kentucky native like Beshear, Moore took the reins at the KDP on Beshear’s recommendation after he won the Governor’s race in 2007.

New chairs typically are elected at the party’s state central committee meetings following such recommendations. The next of these meetings for the KDP is in February. Beshear reportedly has not begun the search for a replacement, but more information on the process is expected to be available next week.

The fate of the rest of the KDP’s staff and leadership is as of yet undetermined. Communications Director Thom Karmik said “no decision has been made” on the future of those in other KDP positions.

For his part, he said he had done some investigating into other jobs, but did not know if he would move on from the state party. Karmik, who previously worked as a political operative in Illinois, was hired by the KDP in April.
