Most of us know Bill Watterson as the creator of Calvin & Hobbies, one of the most popular comic strips ever printed on the funny pages.
But how many of you knew for a couple of months in 1980, he was the editorial cartoonist at the now defunct Cincinnati Post?
Here are a couple of Watterson's cartoons posted by blogger Matt Taubor. According to him, the scans are from microfilm and the quality is super-poor, but Watterson's cartooning artistry still comes through.
According to Tabour, in this cartoon from August 7th, 1980, Cincinnati mayor Ken Blackwell is behind the wheel of a bus. At the time, a 1% increase in the county sales tax was being proposed for SORTA (Southwest Ohio Regional Transit Authority). Mayor Blackwell was opposed to the measure, citing it as "too costly". Watterson depicts Blackwell taking the levy 'out of service'. The proposal ultimately failed.
It's interesting how the cartoon echoes today. In 2006, Blackwell was still in politics, as Ohio's incumbent Secretary of State who made a failed bid for governor. In 2007, Cincinnati had a 1% county sales tax on the ballot to fund a new jail that met defeat.
Here's the second one. According to Tabour, this cartoon is from August 14th, 1980. Jimmy Carter had been victorious over Sen. Ted Kennedy in a convention battle over the presidential nomination.
At the convention, Kennedy tried to turn some of Carter's delegates, which has shades of a possible upcoming struggle between Senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Here in the cartoon, a tiny Carter has felled Kennedy like David vs. Goliath. His victory will be short-lived however, with Ronald Reagan waiting to knock him into oblivion.
So why did he quit? Well, according to an interview he gave Andrew Christie in Honk magazine, he didn't:
"The agreement was that they could fire me or I could quit with no questions asked if things didn't work out during the first few months. Sure enough, things didn't work out, and they fired me, no questions asked. My guess is that the editor wanted his own Jeff MacNelly (a Pulitzer winner at 24), and I didn't live up to his expectations. My Cincinnati days were pretty kafkaesque. I had lived there all of two weeks, and the editor insisted that most of my work be about local, as opposed to national, issues. Cincinnati has a weird, three-party, city manager-government, and by the time I figured it out, I was standing in the unemployment lines. I didn't hit the ground running. Cincinnati at that time was also beginning to realize it had major cartooning talent in Jim Borgman, at the city's other paper, and I didn't benefit from the comparison."
These cartoons are so rare and hard to come by, that I have only ever seen four. The other two, along with a ton of rare Bill Watterson artwork, can be found here.
