Battleground poll: Obama leads in N.H., Pa., Mich.

According to the second wave of the Allstate/National Journal Battleground State polls, Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is leading among registered voters in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Michigan.

The polls were conducted in states seen as likely to swing from "blue" in 2004 to "red" in the upcoming presidential election.

In New Hampshire, the Obama-Biden ticket leads by 1 point (Obama-Biden, 44 percent; McCain-Palin, 43 percent; undecided, 11 percent).

The race is similarly close in Pennsylvania, where the poll shows the Democratic ticket leading by 2 points (Obama-Biden, 43 percent; McCain-Palin, 41 percent; undecided, 15 percent). [link to PolitickerPA story]

Obama's clearest lead is in Michigan, according to the Allstate poll, which shows him 8 points ahead (Obama-Biden 47 percent; McCain-Palin 39 percent;  undecided, 11 percent).

The economy was cited as the top issue facing the country in all three states with voters reporting that Obama "better understands their needs and priorities." In these "blue" to "red" battleground states, 61 percent of voters said the economy was their paramount concern. And of those voters, 47 percent said they would vote for Obama-Biden, whereas 39 percent said they would vote for McCain-Palin.

The Allstate/National Journal Battleground Survey was conducted from Sept.18 to Sept. 22 among a randomly selected group of approximately 400 registered voters in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Michigan. The margin of error was +/- 4.9 percent.

The first round of the survey was conducted from Sept. 11 to Sept. 15 in Colorado, Florida, New Mexico, Ohio and Virginia, five states that could turn from "red" in 2004 to "blue."

Debate and "Reagan Democrats"

I'm writing this about an hour after the debate, and the one post-debate piece of questioning that seems relevant to me was offered up by Pat Buchanan, who wondered how so-called Reagan Democrats saw Obama and McCain tonight. Having spent all the 1980s in the Midwest, my take is that Obama did OK, but that McCain's aggressiveness might have played OK, too - for now. As time passes, though, I think Obama will be seen as tough and levelheaded, while McCain will be seen as hotheaded. How that will translate into votes remains to be seen.
