Barr says he’s at 7% nationally in presidential race

The presidential exploratory committee for Bob Barr, the former Republican Georgia Congressman who is now a member of the Libertarian Party, says that an internal poll shows Barr with 7 percent of the vote in a prospective run for the White House. The poll also found Barr with 36 percent name recognition.

"Bob Barr's name recognition and voter support are tremendous considering he has never run as a national candidate and has yet to spend any money on advertising,” said Barr spokesman Russell Varney. “In the event Bob Barr officially enters the race, he will already be half way to qualifying for the fall Presidential debates.”

When compared with specific candidates, Barr receives 9 percent in a race against Democrat Barack Obama and Republican John McCain, and 11 percent against Democrat Hillary Clinton and McCain.

Barr, 60, is perhaps most widely remembered for the outspoken role he played in Bill Clinton’s impeachment proceedings.

The telephone survey of 1,000 likely voters was conducted by Pulse Opinion Research on April 3.
