On the last day of “freshman orientation” in Washington, D.C. for incoming members of Congress, Kentucky’s sole new member, state Sen. Brett Guthrie (R-Bowling Green), got a little bit of bad news: the incoming lawmaker finished 54th in a drawing with the 53 other new members determining who gets first dibs on available office space for new members in the Longworth, Rayburn, and Cannon buildings on Capitol Hill.
Each member drew a chip numbered 1 to 54, with the number corresponding to the place in line for office selection, according to the Associated Press. Guthrie drew number 54.
As it stands, the offices available to freshmen are reportedly the worst of the lot, as those incumbents remaining in D.C. already rejected them.
His luck of the draw meant Guthrie would be the last to pick from those open offices, forcing the Republican freshman into the spot no one else wanted.
Incidentally, the incoming member who drew the first choice in the lottery was Michigan Democrat Gary Peters – a former Commissioner of the Michigan State Lottery.
