Where is the Star on the tuition tax credit issue?

by David Safier

If you live in Tucson and you want to know about the tuition tax credit/STO mess, there's currently only one place to go: my posts on BfA. The Star has been AWOL when it comes to covering the story. I don't think it would take all the fingers on one hand to count up the articles the Star has published on the topic since the story broke. Meanwhile, the East Valley Trib put together a 5 part investigative series which has received national recognition and has added much more information since then with regular, in depth reporting. The Republic is giving the Trib a run for its money, doing its own research and adding to the discussion.

Reporting on Imagine School in Indiana brings results

by David Safier

Remember that wonderful 5 part investigation of tuition tax credits and STOs in the East Valley Trib? And remember how the Trib reporters as well as others at the Republic kept adding to the story? And remember how all this journalistic attention led to not one, but two legislative committees looking into tax credits and STOs?

Pretty neat how that works, isn't it? Power of the press and all that good stuff.

Well, a similar thing is beginning to happen in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where the Journal Gazette published a series of articles about their local, non profit Imagine Schools being run by the for profit Imagine Schools corporation instead of by their local boards, in direct violation of IRS regulations.

East Valley Trib to close December 31

by David Safier

Yet another Arizona paper which has performed a valuable journalistic service is shutting down. The East Valley Tribune will be ending both its newspaper and online presences at the end of the year.

One less news source means some stories will slip by unreported, and other papers, pushed to better journalism by the sting of competition, may grow more complacent.

We're in the midst of a sea change of some kind. The outcome is far from certain.

"Education Inc." -- Imagine Schools under the microscope

by David Safier

Today's Journal Gazette in Fort Wayne, Indiana, began a 3 part series about the corporation, Imagine Schools, and the charters it runs in Indiana. Compared to these stories, the posts I've written have handled these folks with kid's gloves. The first day's articles are serious stuff.

The Sunday paper actually has two interlocking stories, Private company skirts public boards in running tax-funded charter schools and Company’s compliance to tax policy in question, as well as an editorial, Who’s minding the charters? If that sounds familiar, it's because it's the same approach the East Valley Trib took in its investigative series on tuition tax credits and STOs.

AG looking into Student Tuition Organizations

by David Safier

Michelle Reese at the East Valley Trib continues to be on top of the tuition tax credit/STO story. The latest:

The Arizona attorney general has sent letters to 19 of the state’s nonprofit school tuition organizations asking them to explain why they didn’t spend 90 percent of donations on scholarships for private school students as required by law.

The 90% figure is complicated by the difference between a calendar year and a school year. The STOs get a huge chunk of money the last few days of the year, and they most likely don't give it out until sometime the next year.

In praise of journalists and good journalism

by David Safier

I gather most of my information sitting here behind my MacBook. If Google Search, Google Alerts and the newspapers somehow disappeared from the web, I'd probably fold up my laptop and go home. Except that I'm already home. So I'd just fold up my laptop and do something else.

From this vantage point at my desk, I get to take unfair advantage of others' work. I cut and paste their copy, comment on it and carp at the reporters when I feel like carping. Fortunately, I'm self aware enough to know that's exactly what I'm doing. I never think, "What do we need those jerks for?" I know how much I need those reporters, both for myself as an informed citizen and for the writing I do on BfA.

Glenn Beck, Phoenix DJ

by David Safier

Chris Coppola at the East Valley Trib dug up this gem, and BlueMeanie passed it on to me. Here's Glenn Beck doing a TV ad in 1986 for his show at Phoenix Radio station Y95. Don't forget, Rush was a rock jock too. It's great training for what they do.
