Mayor Bill de Blasio took his infamous “dad humor” to the stage last night at the annual Inner Circle Show, a yearly charity musical in which the City Hall press corps roasts the mayor through song and dance.
The new mayor kept to tradition by following with his own comedic performance. But unlike previous years when former Mayor Michael Bloomberg brought in full Broadway casts and hired troops of professional set designers and choreographers, Mr. de Blasio chose a lower-key Saturday Night Live-style sketch lineup and leaned on his celebrity connections, including Steve Buscemi, Cynthia Nixon and comedian singer Lady Rizo, as well as the City Hall press staff.
The performance began with Mr. Buscemi reprising his Nucky Thompson role from Boardwalk Empire, where Mr. Buscemi plays a corrupt, wheeling-and-dealing New Jersey political boss from the 1920s. Mr. de Blasio pretends to interview the power broker for a position in his yet-to-be-filled administration.
“According to the press, we have some kind of issue with snow. Do you have any experience removing snow?” Mr. de Blasio asked.
“Let’s just say that I’ve had some unwanted things removed and leave it at that,” Mr. Buscemi responded.
Other sketches included a game of Jeopardy! with the Rev. Al Sharpton, several jabs at the press, and jokes about the mayor’s chronic lateness.
