Former Councilman Lew Fidler is going back to the City Council–but this time, he won’t be serving as an elected official.

Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito has hired Mr. Fidler, a 12-year Brooklyn lawmaker and attorney, to join the City Council as a part-time counsel, a spokesman for Ms. Mark-Viverito confirmed. Mr. Fidler is working in the office of the general counsel, where he helps represent the entire council body, not just the speaker.

Mr. Fidler declined to elaborate on his position and a council spokesman declined to comment further. Politicker first reported that Mr. Fidler was in line to join Ms. Mark-Viverito’s council in December.

Mr. Fidler’s new role is at least partially a result of the dynamics of the contentious speaker’s race, sources said. When a deal was brokered in December to eventually elect Ms. Mark-Viverito, the Brooklyn Democratic Party provided many of the votes needed to ensure that Ms. Mark-Viverito could overcome her rival. Mr. Fidler is a close ally of Frank Seddio, the chair of the borough’s Democratic party, and Mr. Fidler’s new role represents another reward for his help. (Mr. Fidler played a background role in the race as well.)

“Fidler joining the council throws a bone at Seddio for his support of Melissa and was no question part of the terms of the deal,” said one Brooklyn Democrat.
