With just a handful of days left before voters return to the polls, Bill de Blasio is still sitting atop a huge lead over Republican rival Joe Lhota.

Although Mr. Lhota has gained some traction since Quinnipiac University last surveyed the field a week ago, the 5-point drop in Mr. de Blasio’s margin–from 44 percent to 39 percent–isn’t enough to shake Mr. de Blasio’s likely confidence in his eventual victory next Tuesday. Independence Party candidate Adolfo Carrión has just 3 percent.

“It’s a wipe-out, more than 2-1 for the Democratic candidate,” said pollster Maurice Carroll in a statement. “Voters have gotten to know Republican Joe Lhota better, but they don’t like him any better.”

The huge divide remains despite Mr. Lhota’s ominous warnings about crime and race riots returning to the city if Mr. de Blasio wins.

“Maybe they’re turned off by those exceptionally tough TV commercials,” Mr. Carroll said.

The two leading mayoral hopefuls are set to face off in their third and final debate tonight.
