Headline of the Day: “Anyone Want to See an Incredibly Sassy Twitter Fight Between Two New York Political Officials?”
Steve Spinola, the president of the Real Estate Board of New York, defended his organization’s controversial independent expenditure effort in a feisty Road to City Hall interview last night. Four Democratic City Council nominees subsequently joined the show to castigate REBY’s spending, among other things.
Apparently every single City Council member now wants to be speaker, including Vinnie Gentile, Jimmy Van Bramer, Rosie Mendez and Jumaane Williams, in addition to the previously-known names: Mark Weprin, Dan Garodnick, Inez Dickens, Melissa Mark-Viverito, Annabel Palma and Jimmy Vacca.
Joe Lhota also has a historic candidacy. If elected, he’ll be the first bearded mayor in 100 years–when William Jay Gaynor ran the city in 1913. “My wife and daughter have given me the stamp of approval so that’s all I need — although they did tell me I don’t pull it off quite as well as Brad Pitt,” he told amNewYork in a statement.
And Mr. Lhota continues to insist he loves to hug. “John [Catsimatidis] was throwing as much mud as he possibly could—I’ve never met anybody who thinks I’m mean, I’ve never met anybody who thinks I’m not hug-able,” Mr. Lhota told the Wall Street Journal to explain his poor polling numbers. “I tend to hug a lot of people every day. That’s what I do.”
