Vito Lopez may have left the State Assembly last month in the wake of bombshell sexual harassment allegations, but an electoral war for his former district is still heating up. According to sources, Maritza Davila, Mr. Lopez’s co-district leader who nearly unseated Councilwoman Diana Reyna four years ago, will run for his old job.

Further pointing to her expected campaign, Andy Marte, a former Lopez staffer still supportive of the now-toxic pol, posted a notice to district residents letting them know that petitions will soon be circling around with Mr. Lopez’s and Ms. Davila’s names on them.

“Tomorrow is the first day of petitioning. If you live in Bushwick, Williamsburg, & Ridgewood and you don’t see VITO LOPEZ OR Maritza Davila On the petition DONT SIGN THE SHEET,” Mr. Marte wrote on Facebook. “Call me if you have any questions. VITO LOPEZ FOR CITY COUNCIL. MARITZA DAVILA FOR STATE ASSEMBLY.”

The post is also a sign that Mr. Lopez is moving forward with his City Council campaign–or at the very least keeping his options open. Mr. Lopez told the New York Post last month that he might consider putting his Council ambitions on hold, depending on his health as he undergoes treatments for cancer.

Attorney Jay Otaño, who ran against a Lopez-aligned state senator last year, is Ms. Davila’s likely opponent. Ms. Reyna’s former chief of staff, Antonio Reynoso, would be Mr. Lopez’s main opponent should he indeed leap into the race for the term-limited councilwoman’s seat.

Although state legislative races normally occur on even-numbered years, Mr. Lopez’s sudden resignation resulted in a vacancy that will be filled during this year’s regularly-scheduled city elections.
