The New York Times looked into Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz's Sunday life, entitling the piece, "Being Brooklyn, Aided by Cheesecake."

Yesterday, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer basically conquered Brooklyn and received the endorsements of many of the borough's elected officials for his comptroller campaign, including not only Mr. Markowitz, but Reps. Jerry Nadler, Nydia Velázquez, Yvette Clarke and Hakeem Jeffries; State Senators Daniel Squadron, Eric Adams and Kevin Parker; Assembly Members Bill Colton, Joan Millman, Dov Hikind, Nick Perry, Helene Weinstein, Karim Camara, Felix Ortiz, Alan Maisel, Annette Robinson, Jim Brennan, Steve Cymbrowitz, Joe Lentol, Alec Brook-Krasny, Peter Abbate and Walter Mosley; and Council Members Domenic Recchia, Tish James, Vinnie Gentile, Steve Levin, Diana Reyna, Brad Lander and Jumaane Williams.

And State Senator Eric Adams and Councilman Domenic Recchia are off with six-figure fundraising totals in their bids to replace Mr. Markowitz. In announcing his take, Mr. Adams interestingly appeared to take potshots at the incumbent, arguing things like “People misunderstand and think the borough president has lost the ability to lead” and "I have no desire to spend the next four years cutting ribbons only.”

Last night, current Comptroller John Liu's campaign released its own fundraising totals, noting, "2,052 contributions for a total of $522,000 were received during the July 12, 2012 - January 11, 2013 reporting period." To show Mr. Liu's operation hasn't slowed down due to the allegations of improper fundraising against his campaign treasurer, the release reminded recipients of comparable totals raised in most of their previous 6-month periods. Mr. Liu, vaguely referring to his still-unannounced mayoral campaign, said, "I'm truly touched by the magnitude of support from my fellow New Yorkers, especially from first-time donors to any campaign, and humbly proud of the strong foundation from which I will soon launch my 2013 campaign. All systems go, full steam ahead!"

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was interviewed by the Washington Post's Jason Horowitz ahead of his gun policy summit in Maryland later this morning. The piece is worth reading:

“There are clearly some people who really believe that the government is out to get them, and they are going to fight to the death on guns,” Bloomberg said. “And then there is the general public that thinks this is meshugana” — crazy....

“Leaders cajole, bribe, threaten, slather. They build relationships,” said Bloomberg, who compared the president unfavorably to Bill Clinton, “a people person” who used the golf course as an office....

“The only danger of that happening is if you are not effective,” Bloomberg said. He said the pro-gun candidate who took his Bloomberg-assisted loss hardest was a Nancy Pelosi-backed California Democrat, Rep. Joe Baca, “who was stupid enough to go on the floor of the House and blame me. And I couldn’t have asked for better advertising. Everybody else read that and said, ‘Oh my God, maybe Bloomberg is serious.’ Thank you very much. Can I pay you to do it again?”

Mr. Bloomberg also penned an op-ed in the New York Daily News where he claimed almost a million individuals have signed his "Demand a Plan" petition conducted through Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

The Daily News separately noted Speaker Shelly Silver's extensive history as an Albany kingpin: "Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver last week was selected to begin his 20th year as the chamber’s leader, bringing the Albany powerbroker ever closer to Oswald Heck’s record of 23 years as speaker. Just how unusual is such longevity? Consider that since Silver became speaker in 1994, there have been five governors, six Senate majority leaders, five state attorney generals and three state comptrollers."
