Senator Shirley Huntley may have been indicted, but some of her Democratic colleagues ignored the corruption allegations to give her a last-minute cash infusion earlier this month. The move didn't work, however, and voters selected Councilman James Sanders to replace her. One of those colleagues, Senator Malcolm Smith, is mulling a run for mayor as a Republican.

Michael Duncan, who finished with 14% of the vote against Mr. Sanders in 2009, registered paperwork to run for his seat again now that the incumbent will be vacating his seat early after November elections. Mr. Sanders has endorsed his chief of staff, Donovan Richards, and local club president Earnest Flowers is also in the mix. A nonpartisan special election will occur sometime in 2013.

"The size of this is so much bigger than what they did," the law-enforcement source said of the two teenagers who committed petty vandalism against Rep. Michael Grimm's office. "Their lives have been changed forever. It's so disproportionate."

The chairman of the Staten Island Democratic Party, John Gulino, weighed in as well, issuing a statement blasting Mr. Grimm for comparing the alleged break-in to the shooting of Rep. Gabby Giffords. Mr. Grimm's statement, he said, "is inexcusable and defies logic." He added, "Congressman Grimm should apologize at once for making that statement since it is appears that the whole rush to judgment on his part was merely an act of juvenile vandalism."

On a side note, Mr. Grimm was spotted working at a pizza parlor in Bay Ridge last night. Pictures will surely be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, Staten Island Borough President Jim Molinaro won't quit it with the Lady Gaga thing. Quote the esteemed public official:

"A slut is someone that's immoral or uses improper conduct. That's the interpretation in the Random dictionary. So she's using improper conduct. So she's a slut. What's the big deal about it? Are you excited because she's female? There's males that are sluts too"

A poll commissioned by the DCCC found Syracuse Rep. Ann Marie Buerkle trailing her Democratic opponent, Dan Maffei. Ms. Buerkle, who won in an upset in 2010 and holds a Democratic-leaning district, may be the most vulnerable congressional incumbent in New York State.

With his reelection campaign over, State Senator Adriano Espaillat is now fundraising to retire the debt from his unsuccessful congressional bid. That campaign account can also be used in 2014, should Mr. Espaillat take another stab at Rep. Charlie Rangel's seat.
