Rep. Charlie Rangel is burying the hatchet with with his top electoral foe, at least for the time being. State Senator Adriano Espaillat, who ran against Mr. Rangel earlier this year, is welcoming the newly-elected president of the Dominican Republic to Washington Heights and will be joined by Mr. Rangel. Explained an Espaillat aide, "Adriano is hosting the event and he invited Charlie, who was nice enough to say he'd come."

Newly-minted Democratic county chair Frank Seddio continued to roll out olive branches in Brooklyn, most recently by scheduling appearances at reform-oriented Democratic clubs unlikely to be exceedingly thrilled by the establishment pol replacing Assemblyman Vito Lopez. Also apparently attending is "Green Party Congressional Candidate Colin Campbell," a possible reference to Colin Beavan's campaign in the borough. Regardless, this reporter appreciates the attention.

Lincoln Restler admitted his total from last Friday was off, and he will actually enter his recount against Chris Olechowski at a slight deficit. Of interest to the larger politics at stake, Public Advocate--and likely mayoral candidate in 2013--Bill de Blasio has been keeping in close political proximity with Mr. Restler, whom he endorsed previously. Mr. de Blasio [prematurely] declared victory with Mr. Restler last week and is now helping him raise campaign funds to help with the recount efforts.

Another endangered incumbent found himself in a slightly better position than Mr. Restler, however: GOP State Senator Steve Saland, a supporter of last year's gay marriage legislation who faced a surprisingly close result in his primary election earlier this year. “Given the outcome of the absentee ballot count, I am honored and gratified the Republican voters have supported and selected me to serve as their candidate,” Mr. Saland said to declare victory earlier today. His opponent, Neil Di Carlo, will remain on the Conservative Party's line.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad may be a big man back home in Iran, but in New York City electoral politics, he's apparently not especially popular. Earlier today, a number of likely 2013 mayoral candidates held a press conference denouncing the Middle East leader. “He is more than unwelcome," Council Speaker Christine Quinn explained, "but I won't use bad words at this press conference."

Speaking of bad words, here's part of a pleasant email exchange between an aide to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and a BuzzFeed reporter:

I now understand why the official investigation by the Department of the Defense as reported by The Army Times The Washington Post concluded beyond a doubt that you're an unmitigated asshole.
