At the White House tomorrow morning, President Barack Obama and government officials will pay tribute to the work sports industry leaders have done to reduce energy usage, and among those leading the event is New York Rangers legend Mike Richter.

Mr. Richter led the team to the Stanley Cup title in 1994 and is known as one of the stronger goalies in NHL history. Since then, he earned a degree from Yale with an emphasis on environmental policy and involved himself in various environmental advocacy organizations. And now, he will soon find himself at an official federal “Green Sports Event.”

“Sports industry leaders are implementing innovative sustainability strategies that are promoting healthier communities and saving organizations money on their energy bills,” a government press release touting Mr. Richter’s involvement read. “Some sports venues have been able to divert up to 90 percent of their waste from landfills to recycling facilities, install renewable energy sources such as solar panel arrays and wind turbines, and save as much as $500,000 annually in utility costs.”

Mr. Obama is using the event to tout his “Better Buildings Initiative” in particular, which is plan to create jobs through building improvements, aiming to make America’s buildings 20 percent more efficient over the next decade.

(The Rangers weren’t listed as one of the teams with noted environmental accomplishments — the release only cited the  St. Louis Cardinals and the Portland Trail Blazers.)
