Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand made $165,614 last year, paying $28,828 in federal taxes and another $9,735 in New York State taxes, according to tax returns just filed on her website.
Ms. Gillibrand released five years worth of tax returns today, making her only one of a handful of senators to do so. Her Republican opponent, Wendy Long, has been calling on her to make more tax returns available, while the Democrats have been pounding GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney to do the same.
Ms. Gillibrand has been pushing for more transparency since first being elected to Congress in 2006, posting her daily schedules and financial information online.
“I have always placed a top priority on finding new ways to increase the accessibility, transparency and accountability of government because it’s the right thing to do,” said Senator Gillibrand. “Whether by passing legislation to ban any insider trading by members of Congress, or leading by example through posting my schedule and financial information to my website, New Yorkers deserve to know their interests are my only interests. I will always look for new ways to further my commitment to transparency.”
It is worth noting that both this year and last Ms. Gillibrand took home less money than the Senate salary of $174,000. The reason, a spokesman explained, is because of capital gains losses her husband, Jonathan Gillibrand incurred. Mr. Gillibrand has been for most of Ms. Gillibrand’s time in the Senate a private investor, although he recently took a job with an organization trying to bring Formula One racing to the New York metro area.
