Over the weekend, New York City saw a sharp uptick in violence with seven murders, causing the New York Post to assign blame to judges who have overturned stop-and-frisk-based gun convictions and the 2004 rollback of strict, Rockefeller-era drug laws. On Fred Dicker's radio show today, however, Governor Andrew Cuomo directly stated that he's not on the same page.

"I saw the editorial in your paper today [that] touched on that Fred," he said. "I haven't seen any causal relationship between those court decisions and what happened recently. So I don't know that there's any factual connection."

Mr. Dicker pressed the issue, asking Mr. Cuomo if those judges were right or wrong in their decisions, causing the governor to stress the need for a "balance" in response.

"Look, stop-and-frisk, there's no doubt that it can be an effective policing strategy, there's also no doubt that there's a balance with civil liberties, right?" he said.

Mr. Cuomo then pivoted to the Post's second point about Rockefeller drug law reform and connected it to his own efforts to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana to explain his disagreement.

"I'm trying to address it in terms of low level marijuana possessions. So I think it's a delicate balance but I disagree," he added. "I disagree with your editorial and I don't see where they get the connection between the Rockefeller drug laws and the July 4th situation and I don't see how the answers are what the editorial suggests."
