(Photo: Facebook)

There's a growing sense among some politicos that Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley's congressional campaign is a more real force than it seemed at the start (i.e. when she was battling charges that her candidacy was designed to split the white vote to favor the county pick, Assemblywoman Grace Meng), and nudging her further along that path today is an endorsement from the Queens Ledger.

"She has more intellect than most people give her credit for," the editorial says in what could be a case of Damning With Faint Praise. "[A]nd she is truly as comfortable walking with the working class than any of her opponents in this primary."

The endorsement overall focused on Ms. Crowley's blue collar political brand, stating, "We like the way she has spent her time in office, fighting for more police, fire services and not being afraid of challenging the City Council speaker on more than a few issues when her constituents counted on her to represent their interests."

A couple other newspaper endorsements have come in already for the June 26th Democratic primary, including the Jewish Press for another one of Ms. Crowley's competitors, Assemblyman Rory Lancman, but the biggest dailies -- like the New York Times -- have yet to weigh in.

For those unaware of the Queens political scene, the smaller newspapers there carry a bit of a punch and are often involved in their own drama. For example, the Queens Chronicle has put the Queens Tribune on notice over its ties to Ms. Meng's campaign.
