In a commencement speech at Liberty University  this morning Mitt Romney praised anti-gay pastor Jerry Falwell and the founder of Chick-fil-A, a fast food chain that has donated millions to anti-gay groups. Falwell, who passed away in 2007, was the founder of Liberty University and an outspoken opponent of homosexuality.

“In his 73 years of life, Dr. Falwell left a big mark,” Mr. Romney said today. “The calling Jerry answered was not an easy one.  Today we remember him as a courageous and big-hearted minister of the Gospel who never feared an argument, and never hated an adversary.  Jerry deserves the tribute he would have treasured most, as a cheerful, confident champion for Christ.”

Falwell gained national fame in the late 1970’s working with former beauty pageant winner Anita Bryant on her efforts to fight an ordinance prohibitng discrimination against gays in Florida. During that campaign, Falwell gave a speech in Miami where he said “so-called gay folks would just as soon kill you as look at you.” He has also condemned gays as “brute beasts . . . part of a vile and satanic system” that “will be utterly annihilated” leading to “a celebration in heaven.” In 1999, Falwell denounced the popular children’s show Teletubbies because he felt one of the costumed characters on the show, “Tinky Winky,” was sending covert gay signals because he was purple and had a triangle shaped antennae.

“As a Christian I feel that role modelling the gay lifestyle is damaging to the moral lives of children,” Falwell said of the Teletubbies.

In his speech at Liberty, Mr. Romney shared his own memory of Falwell:

“I will always remember his cheerful good humor and selflessness.  Several years ago, in my home, my wife and I were posing for a picture together with him.  We wanted him to be in the center of the photo, but he insisted that Ann be in the middle, with he and I on the sides.  He explained, by pointing to me and himself, ‘You see, Christ died between two thieves.'”

Mr. Romney also praised Truett Cathy, the founder of the Chick-fil-A sandwich chain, who was also being honored at the commencement. Chick-fil-A has been boycotted by gay rights groups for donating large sums of money to groups that condemn homosexuality and fight gay marriage.

“The Romney campaign comes to a sudden stop when we spot a Chick-fil-A. Your chicken sandwiches were our comfort food through the primary season, and there were days that we needed a lot of comforting,” Mr. Romney said to Mr. Cathy in his speech. “So, Truett, thank you and congratulations on your well-deserved honor today.”

In the wake of President Barack Obama’s announcement in support of same sex marriage last week, gay rights and specifically Mr. Romney’s record on the issue have increasingly come into the spotlight. Though he was a supporter of gay marriage during his early career in Massachusetts, in recent years, Mr. Romney has fought against same sex marriage. In his speech at Liberty, he reiterated his opposition to gay marriage.

“The American culture promotes personal responsibility, the dignity of work, the value of education, the merit of service, devotion to a purpose greater than self, and, at the foundation, the pre-eminence of the family,” Mr. Romney said. “As fundamental as these principles are, they may become topics of democratic debate. So it is today with the enduring institution of marriage. Marriage is a relationship between one man and one woman.”

  1. Jerry Falwell and Anita Bryant helped the gay movement more then anybody can imagine. They gave the movement movement… first out of the closets, out of the bars and into the streets. I outed myself when I created the ANITA BRYANT”S HUSBAND IS A HOMO SAPIEN! T-shirt and was carried by UPI, a week later I was able to get Jane Fonda to wear one at a gay fund raiser and was mentioned nationally via A.P. d my biggest footnote in gay history… on Orange Tuesday( I named it) I took a photo of Harvey Milk at the end of an impromptu march against a Dade County anti-gay vote that rescinded a gay rights ordinance 3,000 mile away… and was carried by the Associated Press. It introduced Harvey Milk as an openly gay spokesperson 5 months before he was elected. My favorite anti-Falwell message was on a Bumper Sticker was “The Moral Majority” is neither!

  2. I just laugh about these people like Romney and Rubio, one from the Mormon church where they have a high rate in suicide in gay teens, for not going against their family decide the only way is going to heaven or force them to marry and then finishing in divorces full or anger, hate and frustration for both parts.Rubio against illegal inmigrants, when his family came to America in a wood raft from Cuba,is well-known,and if americans don’t know I will educate u,the government is against Castro and the policy is,if the cubans are caught in the water they return them to Cuba, but if they are caught in the shore: Welcome to America and they get their paper work really easy, but at the end of the day they come here as illegally as the mexicans.
How contradictory are these people!! and how sad are the ones who follow them like lambs to the butcher.
Like Clinton who signed for DOMA defence of the marriage between a man and a woman, how he dared when he asked somebody outside his matrimony to perform oral sex on him!! Are this kind of people the ones who defend the holy matrimony??
Please give me a little break, some gays couples are more monogamous than Clinton or guys like him can be!!!
Romney says his faith is different from evangelists…I though it was just one law and one God? Of course he cannot tell them the secret laws of the mormon church or the secrets of their temples…scary!!!
Americans investigate, just don’t follow,You tell your children to be a leader not a follower, well DO WHAT YOU PREACH…investigate about those things!!!
Obama has his failures too,but I think supporting marriage for gay people he is showing that he has integrity,we can’t forget,I can’t,what we teach our children”a nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all” Is this just a saying or something that we have to treasure?.
Remember when blacks were second class citizens even the mormon church didn’t allow them to be priests,by revelation they started to be accepted as priests in 1978,from revelation from God they accepted them as human beings,it seems mormons have a lot of revelations that help them when they are in hot water to solve certain situations,I wish I had the same luck and have arevelation when I am in trouble!!
It seems these guys they put the christian shield to show they are worth of certain things, but at the end of the day they don’t follow the rules: love your neigbors.
Love your gay neigbors, not only in February when they pay their taxes, because if they are invisible during they year, they shouldn’t pay taxes.
The story is repeated one more time, first the blacks, then the interracial couples and now gays and lesbians…come on now!! It is 2012 and America is greater than life…show the world that you accept, understand, love, don’t discriminate and give your own kind the same rights that you go in other nations preaching…the good work begins at home Mr Romney…well…maybe we need a revelation from Joseph Smith or Young before this century finishes about allowing gays to marry!!…Let see if we get blessed with this one.
”Americans-cubans” like Rubio don’t forget that your parents were ”wet backs” like the mexicans that clean your garden and cook for you in restaurants…Shame on you to give your back to your own kind…well…I think you make a deserve each other one of a kind presidential duo: Romney-Rubio…
We are going to need a ”special blessing” if they win in November!!! Start praying now for a revelation… for a good one so we can have”liberty and justice for all”.
