Innovation PAC, a committee dedicated to fighting for small business investment research, seems to have made Congresswoman Nydia Velázquez’s defeat this election cycle their sole goal for the moment, and they’re out with a risqué web ad to prove their point.
“Nydia I’m home early,” a Democratic cartoon donkey declares as he enters his house, only to hear sexual phrases like “That’s right, who’s your daddy” coming from an upstairs room. It turns out that instead of cheating on the husband-donkey, cartoon Ms. Velázquez is taking corporate money from a cartoon Wall Street Bull dressed in a red smoking jacket.
Curious about the situation, we reached out to the point person behind Innovation PAC, Dan Backer of DB Capitol Strategies PLLC, in order to inquire why they’re targeting Ms. Velázquez so aggressively.
“Because she’s just about the worst thing for small business that the world has ever known,” he responded, pointing to her tenure as the chair and ranking member of the House Small Business Committee. “We saw an opportunity to oppose her and, if we’re really lucky, to hopefully get rid of her.”
Of course, the ad in question has the potential to offend, but Mr. Backer said his group needed to be creative due to their limited resources.
“That was a real concern for me, the last thing I want to do is offend women,” he said, “We have to edgy, we have to be shocking to break through the noise.”
Innovation PAC, which lists two of the incumbent’s challengers on the website Knock Out Nydia, doesn’t seem to be a proxy for either of them as it was formed several years ago and has contributed to a bipartisan group of Washington legislators without any connection to New York City politics.
Mr. Backer didn’t seem to care on who replaces Ms. Velázquez either.
“A wet rag would be better than Nydia in my opinion, and you can quote me on that,” he said.
