"I thank NYU for engaging in these productive conversations.  However, there is still significant work to be done to make this proposal more appropriate to the surrounding area," Mr. Nadler said.  "NYU must continue to find ways to better fit the proposed expansion into the fabric of the Village."

Mr. Nadler specifically said the university needs to do more to ensure that a Mitchell-Lama site near campus remains affordable. 

"I call on NYU to work with 505 LaGuardia to transfer ownership of the land on which the building sits to the cooperative itself, so that this housing development maintains its affordability in perpetuity," he said.

Yesterday, Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer announced that he had negotiated an agreement with NYU to lower the size of the buildings by 20 percent. Mr. Nadler praised Mr. Stringer's handling of the negotiations, but according to his office, the Congressman thinks that the plan should be downsized further.
