Assemblywoman Grace Meng, a candidate for congress in a heavily Asian district in northeastern Queens, just announced string of South Asian community leaders who are supporting her campaign, highlighting some of the diversity of the district she's seeking to represent.

The endorsements in the statement included Maf Uddin, the founder and president of the Alliance of South Asian American Labor; Harbachan Singh, the president of Saul Weprin Democratic Club; Morshed Alam, the president and founder of the New American Democratic Club; and a host of other activists and organizational leaders.

“Trailblazing women like Grace Meng are exactly who we need in Congress these days, fighting for working families and small businesses and standing up to the GOP’s war on women,” Reshma Saujani, a former congressional candidate in the Upper East Side and western Queens, said in the statement. “And we’re here to say that we’re going to be working every day, knocking on doors, reaching out to all of our neighbors, friends and family members to help her get to Washington so she can get Washington working for immigrant communities!”

The press release also featured photos of her appearances earlier this month at Bengali New Year celebrations and the Sikh Day Parade, showcasing her efforts to reach out to the community.

Ms. Meng is competing against multiple other candidates against a field which notably includes Assemblyman Rory Lancman and Councilwoman Elizabeth Crowley. Voters head to the polls June 26th.

Leaders from New York’s growing and active South Asian and Indo-Caribbean community today endorsed Democrat Grace Meng for Congress, calling her the best candidate to grow the economy and create jobs, stand up to Republican attacks on immigrants, and preserve residents’ quality of life.

“Grace Meng is by far the best qualified candidate to stand up for middle class workers and families in Queens,” said Maf Uddin, founder and President of the Alliance of South Asian American Labor. “Whether it’s supporting small businesses or making sure millionaires pay their fair share, we can count on Grace to be our voice in Washington.”

“We need a strong woman like Grace Meng representing us in Washington,” continued Annetta Seecharran, former director of SAYA. “Grace has the right temperament and set of skills to cut through the dysfunction and really get things done for Queens residents.”

The South Asian and Indo-Caribbean community has become increasingly influential in New York politics, and its leaders are actively supporting candidates who will support issues important to the community.

“When elected officials attack immigrants, they are really attacking the American Dream,” said Sayu Bhojwani, former NYC Commissioner of Immigrant Affairs. “In Congress, Grace Meng will protect the values that make our country great by fighting for fair immigration policies and opposing the immigrant-bashing that has become an unfortunate reality in American politics.”

Morshed Alam, President and Founder of the New American Democratic Club in Queens, also endorsed Grace Meng this past weekend.

Accepting the endorsements, Meng thanked the community leaders for their support and pledged to be an advocate for all of Queens’ diverse communities in Washington.

“I’m honored by the endorsements of these community leaders, and for the breadth of support I’ve received since we launched our campaign just a few weeks ago,” Meng said. “But what strikes me the most is that no matter which community we’re in, everybody wants the same things from Washington – fair taxes, help for small businesses and middle class families, and an economy that works for all of us. Working together, we’re going to win in November and make sure that next year, we have a Congress that’s ready to work with President Obama to move our county forward again.”

Veerpan; Seema Agnani, Community Activist; Ali Najmi of SEVA; Dilip Chauhan; and Romita Shetty, Founder of SAAF.
