Andrew Cuomo appears to have left the orbit where most pols grunge for popularity, with a new poll showing that two-thirds of New Yorkers of both political parties approve of the way he is handling the governor’s job.
According to a new Quinnipiac Poll out today, 68 percent of voters approve of the job Mr. Cuomo is doing, including 67 percent of both Republicans and Democrats.
If there is bad news in these new numbers, it is that his approval among black voters is a still respectable 58 percent and that three quarters of New Yorkers decry the administration’s “lack of transparency.”
“Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and New York voters say Gov. Andrew Cuomo has done a beautiful job so far,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. “But if voters liked the result, they weren’t happy with the process, the so-called ‘Big Ugly’ deal where Gov. Cuomo and legislative leaders worked out an agreement on pensions, legislative redistricting, casino gambling, DNA and whatever else they needed to resolve. Was the time honored – or dishonored – Albany practice of three-men-in-a-room the only practical way to get a deal? Most voters don’t think so. How about the lack of transparency – a big problem, three-fourth of voters think.”
