The New York Times accidentally identified Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez as "George Martinez" in a story today. The case of mistaken identity appeared in the caption of photo that accompanied the Times' article about the press conference on the NYPD's alleged use of excessive force at Saturday's Occupy Wall Street protest Mr. Rodriguez held yesterday along with fellow Council members Jumaane Williams, Melissa Mark-Viverito and Stephen Levin.

Originally, the caption for the picture that appeared online and in print read, "On Monday, George E. Packard, a retired Episcopal bishop, between City Councilmen Jumaane D. Williams, left, and George Martinez, protested the arrests Saturday night in Zuccotti Park." Online, the caption has since been changed to identify Mr. Rodriguez by his own name rather than "George Martinez."

For his part, Mr. Rodriguez wasn't bothered by the mixup. He was just happy to see the Times covering the issues raised at the press conference.

"It's understandable that there could be a mix-up, given the intensity of the coverage of the press conference. I have nothing but respect for the Times, and appreciate how seriously they take the NYPD's possible infringement upon the Constitutional rights of the Occupy Wall Street protesters," he told The Politicker.

There is currently no one named George Martinez in the City Council, however a man by that name unsuccessfully ran for Brooklyn's 38th District in 2002.

View the erroneously captioned photo from today's print paper below.
