Councilman Lew Fidler, the Democratic candidate in the special election for former State Senator Carl Kruger’s seat, put out a long list of 266 endorsements when his campaign began. Now, it seems at least a handful of these backers, mostly rabbis, are no longer on board with Mr. Fidler as he campaigns in the heavily Jewish, southern Brooklyn district.

One of these original endorsers, Rabbi Chaim Benoliel, even signed a letter saying a vote for Mr. Fidler is contrary to Torah law due to his socially liberal positions. “It is therefore considered to be a great Chilul Hashem and Assur [forbidden according to Torah law] to vote for or to provide funding, campaign assistance, public recognition or any type of support to Councilman Lewis Fidler,” the letter reads. “To do so would amount to being mesiy’ayah ovrei aveirah (abetting transgression of the Torah’s commandments).”

Rabbi Shlomo Churba Cohen, listed on Mr. Fidler’s announcement as “Shurba Cohen,” is another backer that has withdrawn his support. Earlier this afternoon, Rabbi Cohen’s son Dovid confirmed his father wanted his name taken off Mr. Fidler’s endorsement list.

Although the son declined to state the reason for his father’s shift, Joseph Hayon, a political liaison for Jews for Morality, said he talked to Rabbi Cohen and the decision was due to Mr. Fidler’s stance on gay marriage. Mr. Hayon said the various rabbis wanted to “send a message to Albany and Washington that we will not vote for any candidate that pledges to vote for gay marriage … even if they give us $15,000,000 or supply us with $5,000 education tax credits.”

“I am still receiving requests from leaders of the Orthodox Jewish community asking me how to get their name removed from Fidler’s list,” he added.

Another one of Mr. Fidler’s endorsers, Jack Benton, a former Republican District Leader, told The Politicker he had initially offered his endorsement to Mr. Fidler, but he had done it in an offhand way and was now firmly behind the Republican candidate in the race, attorney David Storobin.

It appears that some of Mr. Fidler’s former backers have already successfully registered their complaints. The Fidler campaign’s Scribd account shows multiple revisions to the list. While Rabbi Aryeh Katzin initially appeared among Mr. Fidler’s 266 supporters, an updated list does not cite him. A source told The Politicker Rabbi Katzin never personally authorized his name to be used and has a policy of not endorsing candidates. Mr. Storobin recently spoke at Rabbi Katzin’s school, Sinai Academy, additionally suggesting at least some level of bipartisanship on the rabbi’s part. Another individual, Rabbi Shlomo Wadiche, was also on the original list but not the updated file.

What kind of impact these endorsement drops will have is unclear as recent signs suggest relative strength on Mr. Fidler’s part. Mr. Storobin just switched campaign managers and Democrats are privately feeling increasingly confident about the race.

The special election opened up when Mr. Kruger pleaded guilty to corruption and resigned. Voters head to the polls on March 20th.

A request for comment to the Fidler campaign was not immediately returned.

  1. Isn’t Mr Hayon the guy that passed around a letter that said homosexuals can be cured through prayer?

Not sure I can vote for anyone that associates with bigots like that.

    1.  The biggest Rabbis in the jewish world today also signed that so your attack on him for that is an attack on Judaism

so you should change your name to Sane Republican Anti Semite.

      1. I will be sure to ask Storobin how he feels about this topic at his next fake press conference.

Perhaps you were the one that called the other guy a “homosexual” for disagreeing with David?

        You guys are such bigots.

      2. Gene Berardelli, shut the fuck up and start dragging your fat ass to help David.  Craig Eaton is furious at the comments you made.

      3. Cuss words, there somebody a little feisty? Sounds like Liam McCabe doesn’t it? Liam good luck on your court date, maybe father Jerry can bail you out of your latest screw up.

      4. Ahhh yes the always on point and always on topic Fidler supporters. From sending hacks to pressers to talking about personnel issues. So how about those tax cuts…oh wait…you remember those things called issues don’t you….nah.

      5.  I dont support Fidler or hacks like him but perhaps your  reading  comprehension went out the window with whatever political savvy you may have had at one point.

      6. When it comes to being such a complete bore and having to type “when it comes to” over and over again because your communication skills are that of the current vice president …. Hey heres is a novel idea, why don’t you type what ever it is your really trying to say introduced by “when it comes” followed by the subject and concluded by “speak for yourself” you repetitive mountain of brilliance.

      7. How about those tax cuts and school vouchers….oh wait I forgot to intro that with “when it comes” and end it with “speak for yourself”..

      8. Speaking of repetitive mountains of brilliance, and novel ideas.

Who’s idea was it to go from personal issues to tax issues to back to personal issues?

Probably a paid staffer or two from team Storobin?

      9. Whoever made the “Conservative Insider” comment is not a mensch, more like a “Lord of the Flies” …

      10. Sort of like those who try for the “transgender” vote in a Boro Park district? Was that comment on or off the job?

      11. Think about it… “Lord of the Flies” … the imagery is perfect for what you do and what you are …  This back and forth shows that you and yours could care less about Storobin and his election… But I knew that all along from MY PEOPLE on the inside among  YOUR PEOPLE….

      12. Ohhhh…scary…I bet the Storobin campaign is all a flutter because “cant stick to the issues” says he has an inside man. No one cares. great retort by the way, when called lord of the flies  respond with “i know you are but what am I”…good one.

      13. It only has to be scary to “Seattle Slew” … good pseudo  —  not quite as fast, but has about the same consumption of food…

      14. Oh..the witty witty come backs..the side splitting one liners…the hilarity…the edginess…how do you do it..oh my sides..please stop…oh you..your to much..”same consumption of food” …omg thats great…wow I’m tearing up…look out folks we gota bad ass over here..this guy really knows how to get to the issues…checkout those posts…how can the republicans ever win with geniuses like that on the oppositions team.

      15. Again was this post on or off the job?

$96,000 is a lot of money for tax-payers to spend on bloggers?

However, is Lew covering your tab for this latest comment?

      16. You make about as much sense as one might expect from a dead horse.  The person you are chiding  has stepped out, but I know h’es always am on the job, since he’s  a high paid confidential exempt  for a VIP  —  he hasn’t made $96,000 for  years — well into six figs since the early 90’s. Anything  else, Mr. Slew?

      19. The only thing fake about that press conference was the Lew Fidler/Schmuck Schumer, flunky apparatchik, party hack , obsessed nut bag Benjamin Schaffer.

Schaffer insisted on interrupting the candidate with inane questions about nixon and in general causing a scene and being a nuisance.

Note the 29:10 min mark where Schaffer makes a b-line for Storobin in front of a live camera while loudly rambling incoherently.

Why don’t you ask Fidler why he needs to send his boys out instead of dealing with the issues? You guys are such single celled parameciums.

      20. As opposed to what, “multi-celled parameciums [sic]”?
You guys are such aquatic plankton. HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

      21. Well mister didn’t ge the reference to the smallest single celled thing one could think of to mock how puny and irrelevant you are. Note the lack of refutation or argument on the subject of mister Schaffer (or taxes or school vouchers) and the continued dodging of any issue. You always know your speaking to a man of intellect when you have to deal with big capital letters and laugh sound effects followed by exclamation points.More brilliance on display.

      22. Well, Miss…  is that “nik” as in a tiny annoying cut, like when you hurry shaving your legs?  OOPS — OUCH!!!!  Then, of course, that would have been be a mispselling  error (note the crafty use of the subjunctive). That is very like typing  “your” when you should have typed “you’re” (which  seems to be a long time habit  and is clearly a “tell”;  even though that’s not truly a misspelling error,  but more an improper usage).

So “[w]hen it comes to”  witty and  sarcastic repartee, “Miss nik,”  realize that before all else you  do “speak for yourself” and of yourself in the way, style  and manner that you speak to and of others.

btw, the spelling and usage errors are of the same type that somebody
habitually made in the Brooklyn GOP hate blogs, “The Jig is Up Atlas”  and
“Politics in Brooklyn”.  So as you should well know, the “HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!” originated there.  Now, it’s one of my favorite quotes.

      23. The only thing fake about that press conference was the Lew Fidler/Schmuck Schumer, flunky apparatchik, party hack , obsessed nut bag Benjamin Schaffer.

    2. When you say in your comment below that you will make sure to ask Strobin at his next conference a question …. I’m just wondering here..are  you the train obsessed nutbag Benjamin Schaffer who likes to interrupt republican press conferences and whose on video for over 10 min standing next to Schumer and Fidler?

  2. David will Win the special election you can take that to the bank.

Each day David grows stronger and more and more people are rallying to his side.

  3. The Brooklyn Republican Master at Arms and Executive Member, and former Republican State Committeeman Jack Benton’s name first appeared on a list of 266 supporters of Democratic State Senate Candidate Lew Fidler on or about January 16, 2012. That list was rolled out with significant fanfare at that time.
On February 10, 2012, the Chairman of the Kings County Republican Party specifically was called out about Mr Benton’s endorsement on the blogs “Atlas Shrugs in Brooklyn” and “Room Eight – New York Politics”. Between then and today, Chairman Eaton told activists associated with the Storobin campaign and other Republican insiders that Jack Benton hadn’t endorsed Lew Fidler for State Senator.
Earlier today, I was informed about Eaton’s comments concerning Jack Benton’s not having endorsed Lew Fidler, but that was not what Mr. Benton had told others. The article above speaks for itself with respect to the original timing of Benton’s Fidler endorsement and his later finding his way into the Storobin fold. The issue is not about Mr. Benton’s timing; the issue is whether Mr. Benton lied to County Chairman Eaton about Benton’s Fidler endorsement or whether Mr. Eaton lied to the Storobin Campaign about Benton’s Fidler endorsement.

Jack Benton’s name has appeared on a list of Lew Fidler’s endorsers for over a month.  Benton’s specific endorsement was challenged on a Brooklyn Republican blog  and publicized, criticized and apologized and a city-wide political blog more than a week ago.  Why can’t  Kings County Republican  Chairman Craig Eaton do a better job keeping his top Republican officers in line behind the only Republican candidate in the 27th S.D. Special Election?  Why can’t Eaton and Benton get their stories straight as to what happened and why?

    1. Youa re pointing the finger in the wrong direction.  LEWIS FIDLER is the man responsible for Jack Benton’s name.  Many people called LEWIS FIDLER and asked their name to be revomed, but LEWIS FIDLER decided to keep his “endorsements” with rabbis like Rabbi Katzin THAT NEVER ENDORSED FIDLER to DEFRAUD the voters.

The rabbis names are still on more that one of LEWIS FIDLER’s multiple scribe document uploads because LEW FIDLER IS A FRAUD!!!

  5. The Brooklyn GOP [Blog] Radio guys, Gene Berardelli and Russell Gallo, have again tried flacking the “story” that Jack Benton did not endorse Lew Fidler.  A very vampy Gene Berardelli unequivoaclly said the Benton endorsement  was a lie, only to be quickly contradicted by Russell Gallo. Gallo took a different tack to walk back Benton’s admitted endorsement of Democrat Lew Fidler.  Gallo’s story, and he’s sticking to it, is that Mr. Benton was kidding with Mr. Fidler when Fidler asked for Benton’s endorsement.  According to Russell Gallo,  who petended to know what was said back ‘n’ forth, “… It was certainly something taken out of context…”  Then Gallo played one of his favorite trump cards (Jack Benton is a venerable old veteran, who’s about 85 years old, so cut him some slack).  Really, where does Gallo get this stuff; and where  do these guys get the nerve?

Meanwhile, a the hardest working Republican in the 27th S.D. is going from rabbi to rabbi, not only confirming those that didn’t endorse Councilman Lew Fidler, but getting many to actually endorse David Storobin.  That Republican is a solid family values conservative,  now acting  completely outside the Brooklyn GOP, with a cadre of  “boots on the ground” daily that exceeds anything brought in by Gallo and Berardelli weekly.  His efforts are now being impeded by other jealous or biased GOP operatives whose loyalties to the Storobin campaign remain suspect, as well as their effectiveness.

    1. Just like some Orthodox Jewish supporters of David Storobin have approached certain endorsers of Lew Fidler, the people who are supposed to be leaders of the Brooklyn Republican Party have to do the same to notable Republicans and people known to be their supporters.   KCRP Chairman Craig Eaton and longtime Republican State Senator Martin Golden, have to shepherd all their friends and supporters into the election effort behind David Storobin or bear proper responsibility for their failure to do so.

Both Golden and Eaton already have made strong statements of support for Storobin, the Republican Candidate in the Special Election in the 27th S.D., who was selected and vouched for by Mr. Eaton. Now both Eaton and Golden have to step up and do everything that’s necessary to get all Republicans, as well as their other supporters, directly involved with the Storobin campaign. If it means twisting a few arms and making some people uncomfortable, so be it; if it means expending some political capital to get the job done, so be it; it is their duty as leaders of the Brooklyn Republican Party.

Storobin’s run for the 27th S.D. is the Brooklyn Republican Party’s first critical test in 2012 and it needs to be won, or else 2012 could be a very long, sad year for the GOP in Brooklyn and New York State.
