Newspaper publisher Tom Allon has raised approximately $120,000 for his mayoral bid since he launched his campaign. A source familiar with the campaign told The Politicker Mr. Allon received contributions from about 300 people including Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney.
In addition to Congresswoman Maloney, Mr. Allon pulled in donations from real estate developer David Picket and Crunch Fitness founder Doug Levine, According to our source, Mr. Allon will qualify for roughly $250,000 in matching funds.
Mr. Allon is preparing to enter the Democratic primary, but he was also selected as the Liberal Party’s mayoral nominee this week, which guarantees he will be a presence in the 2013 general election. The Liberal Party hasn’t ran a candidate for state or citywide office since 2005.
Mr. Allon’s war chest is smaller than the sums collected by some of the more well known likely mayoral candidates. City Council As of last summer, Speaker Christine Quinn reportedly had about $4 million in the kitty and Public Advocate Bill de Blasio reportedly raised about $675,000.
Though he doesn’t have the same money or name recognition as his likely opponents, Mr. Allon has said he’s confident about his chances in the race.
