Things are certainly heating up quickly in the special election to replace Carl Kruger in the State Senate.

David Storobin, the Republican candidate, held a press conference this afternoon to call his Democratic opponent, Councilman Lew Fidler, to “apologize for false, malicious remarks.” The initial remarks in question came from a video posted on Sheepshead Bites, where Mr. Fidler said Mr. Storobin “is busy scrubbing what little history he has because he’s embarrassed about his ties to skinheads, and neo-Nazi groups and white supremacist groups.”

Both candidates in the race are Jewish, a fact Mr. Storobin’s supporters referenced at his press conference today.

“For someone to call a fellow Jew a Nazi, or having ties with Nazis, is never forgivable and never appropriate,” Gedaliah Weinberger, the Chairman of the influential social services organization Agudath Israel, said. “We ask Mr. Fidler to be decent and to apologize for a statement that he should never have made. The apology is not one he has to make to Mr.Storobin alone, but to his constituents and to the entire Jewish community.”

For their part, Mr. Fidler’s campaign does not appear especially likely to apologize. They sent out a press release this afternoon again “call[ing] on Mr. Storobin to come clean on ties to white supremacist websites.”

The accusations are based off of a series of posts by the Room Eight blogger Gatemouth, who pointed out that Mr. Storobin’s old foreign policy blog posts, which have been since been deleted, were linked to on several unsavory websites. These types of internet forums do not traditionally ask permission before linking to, or posting, an article from a third party source.

When pressed multiple times to explain why website and internet forum links specifically suggest “ties to white supremacist groups,” a spokeswoman for Mr. Fidler would only respond by repeatedly asking why Mr. Storobin’s posts would be deleted if he had nothing to hide.

The special election to replace Mr. Kruger opened up when the Brooklyn State Senator pleaded guilty to federal bribery charges. The district’s voters head to the polls March 20th.

They didn’t answer you because they have no answer.  Because this is classic guilt-by-association tactics.  Despicable doesn’t even come close to describing this.

    Rise Above Lew Fidler’s Hate.

  2. Lew screwed this one up. For such an intelligent guy, he goes off on a rant, won’t reel it in, and turns a blind eye to the real problems of his district, such as the lingering stench of Kruger on the Community Board when a fresh start is needed. I’m pretty sure a fresh start is what Lew’s claiming he wants as well, so drop this negative campaign and get the last potential bits of impropriety from a federal investigation out of the district, like Dottie Turano, who needn’t be indicted for everyone to know she’s had more than her fair share of benefits reaped from improper uses of an elected office.
