Did Mitt Romney’s Dog Seek Asylum In Canada?

Mitt Romney may not have told the whole truth about the scandalous tale of his Irish Setter, Seamus, being strapped to the roof of his car during a 12-hour family road trip to Canada. According to a trusted Politicker tipster, two of Mr. Romney’s sons had an off-record conversation with reporters where they revealed the dog ran away when they reached their destination on that infamous journey in 1983.

Mr. Romney’s wife, Ann, has previously said Seamus survived the trip and went on to live to a “ripe old age.” As of this writing, Mr. Romney’s campaign has not responded to multiple requests for comment on this story.

Seamus’ story first came to light in a 2007 Boston Globe profile of Mr. Romney that told the story of the voyage to his father’s cottage in the gated Beach O’ Pines community on Ontario’s Lake Huron:

“The white Chevy station wagon with the wood paneling was overstuffed with suitcases, supplies, and sons when Mitt Romney climbed behind the wheel to begin the annual 12-hour family trek from Boston to Ontario. … Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family’s hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon’s roof rack. He’d built a windshield for the carrier, to make the ride more comfortable for the dog.

According to the Globe, Mr. Romney told his family he would “be making predetermined stops for gas, and that was it,” but one of his sons, Tagg, eventually noticed something was amiss:

As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ”Dad!” he yelled. ”Gross!” A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours.

Mr. Romney responded to his dog’s defecation by “coolly” stopping at a gas station where he “borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway” with Seamus strapped back on the roof.

The Globe initially presented the story as an example of Mr. Romney’s “emotion-free crisis management,” but the incident has enraged many animal lovers and caused many issues on the campaign trail. Seamus inspired an attack ad from Mr. Romney’s Republican rival Newt Gingrich, a “Google bomb” coining “Romney” as a verb meaning “to defecate in terror,” a mocking Tweet from President Barack Obama’s advisor, David Axelrod, and, of course, an angry statement from PETA.

At a campaign stop in Pittsburgh the day after the Globe story ran, Mr. Romney dismissed the tale as a smear from PETA.

“You know, PETA has not been my fan over the years,” he said. “PETA has been after me for having a rodeo at the Olympics and were very, very upset about that. PETA was after me when I went quail hunting in Georgia. And PETA is not happy that my dog likes fresh air.”

Mr. Romney also argued Seamus enjoyed traveling on top of the car.

“He scrambled up there every time we went on trips,” Mr. Romney said. “He got it all by himself and enjoyed it.”

Mr. Romney and his wife clearly want the world to think that, despite defecating himself, Seamus had a pleasant trip to Canada and a long life in the Romney household. However, based on what Mr. Romney’s sons allegedly told reporters about Seamus going on the lam in Canada, Seamus didn’t like being strapped to the car enough to stick around for the return trip.

    1. Hey, at least he was thoughtful enough to build Mr. Seamus a nice windshield for the journey…..quite clever I must say!!!

      1.  That is great. And a PAC or Super PAC “Dogs Against Romney” would get enough donations to make a difference in at least a few markets.

I heard Santorum loves dogs. Maybe a “Man On Dogs Against Romney” PAC could get them coming and going . . .

  1. Wait. So this isn’t first-hand, it isn’t second-hand, it’s third-hand? (or worse?). Am I correct in assuming that this tipster didn’t actually hear the conversation for him or herself?

    1. Zactly derek. I reread the article to see who actually said what and it isn’t there. So in actuality there is no there there.

      1. Who knew back in 1983 that this would become a story? Certainly not Mitt. And he’s one of 7 people who were there, Seamus is dead.

      2. “Cars I’ve Ridden On” is being vetted as we type. Murdoch turned it down, but it’s being published in-house by Bain Capital.

      1. The dog is long gone, Scott is still here and typing. Proves that you shouldn’t ride on top of cars. Even if you are a dog.

      2. This silly story is over 30 years old and Seamus is long gone. This blog teeters  from the Romney’s spend too much on their animals too  little. However you look at it the Romney’s love animals and their children.
        The fake protest fizzled.

      3. I don’t think it’s “fake”. It goes hand in hand with a man who felt qualified to tell a woman to ignore her doctor’s advice and risk her life in childbirth and a man who felt fine with threatening another church member with possible excommunication if she didn’t obey his instruction to give an illegitimate infant up for adoption. (And I’m not even going to go into how out of touch he is with the average citizen of America or how utterly insane it was to have his atheist father in law baptized Mormon after his death…)

If Romney ever gets elected to President then I’m going to have to look for a new home because America will no longer be a place I feel comfortable residing.

    1. Bishop Willard “Mitt” RMONEY DOES think we’re idiots. He’s never told anyone this, but he is a bishop of the Mormon cult, and according to his fellow cultists, he is the person predicted in the White Horse Prophecy (google it). The Mormons believe that the Presidency of the US is meant for them. They also do not acknowledge ANY authority above their own religious authority. That means that if MINT RMONEY is ever elected, this country will become a Mormon theocracy. They have said so openly. It’s time to start listening to them, and believing them.

      1. Huh? I’m not a fan of Romney, but he was well-known to be high-ranking in the Mormon Church hierarchy in Massachusetts. This is not some dark secret.

      2. Nevertheless, he will not discuss it, and any questions about it are immediately shut down by him. Why? There are at least two reports (one in the NYT or the New Yorker, I believe) about RMONEY using his position as a Stake President to bully two women (Mormons). His membership in the Mormon cult is no secret, but why is his holding high office in the cult off limits? President Obama has been subjected to an endless barrage of criticism and hatred because *despite plenty of solid evidence to the contrary,* some Americans believe he does not share their Christian religion. Yet, Bishop Willard “Mitt” RMONEY is KNOWN to belong to a non-Christian religion (the Mormon scriptures state quite clearly that man created god, unlike the Christian bible, which holds that god created man). Why are there no questions about his allegiance to a cult that states very clearly that it is above any secular authority or law? This is a KNOWN issue, unlike the President’s supposed religious affiliation, which was pure speculation and lies. Why is nobody asking Bishop Willard RMONEY whether his position in his church conflicts in any way with the secular position for which he contests? Why is nobody asking him whether he agrees with his cult’s theory that the Presidency is destined for the Mormons, as spelled out in the White Horse  Prophecy?

These people are dangerous, greedy, power-hungry theocratic cultists who tell their adherents what UNDERWEAR they’re permitted, for goodness’ sake. Anyone who doesn’t want to live in a theocracy ought to examine their history and writings very carefully.

      3. Man created God?  Sorry, but  after 56 years of attending Mormon services, I guess I missed that part!  The LDS church uses the Holy Bible as scripture–the King James Version for English speakers.  An article of faith of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints states “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.  We also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”

      4. Unfortunately, Raw Story will not permit me to link to a site that states the actual beliefs of the Mormon cult. You will find it at exmormon dot org. It would appear that you are either dissembling (as Mormons are told to do by their cult authorities, it would seem) or mistaken, since the ex-Mormons at that site aver that the belief that the Mormon god was once a man is a central tenet of your cult.

I note, however, that you leave yourself wiggle room by saying that you believe the Christian Bible to be valid only insofar as it is “translated correctly.” I believe what you *meant* to say was, only insofar as it is “translated correctly according to (your cult),” since there are many scholars whose sole purpose in life is to study the Bible, and none of them agree with the interpretations of your cult.

      5. Politicat is on the money, just read Krakauer and you will be not only scared but bewildered that this is not spoken of. Why isn’t Krakauer being sought after to give his view of Mormonism ? Money talks is why.

      6. I’m not a fan of Romney (or the Mormon faith) but in fairness, I don’t think “Bishop” is that high of a position. Now if he were a GA…

      7. Just wondering, Politicalcat:  He did have a term as Governor of Massachusetts.  Did he convert that commonwealth into a Mormon Theocracy, or does the White Horse Prophecy save all that for the presidency?  It seems to me that if this was his plan, he’d have practiced it when he was executive of Mass.

      8. I did not live in Massachusetts during his term there. However, I understand that he took actions that upset members of other religions. I know of only one incident with definite proof, and that is the slashing of $600K from the state budget for the provision of kosher meals for elderly Jews in nursing homes.

I’m not sure that your argument is necessarily correct, although I do see what you’re trying to do. And I commend you for your effort to defend RMONEY’s religious beliefs from what you deem unfair scrutiny. However, bear in mind that when RMONEY took Massachusetts, he was faced with a Democratic legislature and limited in what he *could* do. As President in the era of the Unitary Executive theory of Presidential power, I regret that he might be able to do a great deal more. I have no evidence to prove my allegations, but in this case, it seems to me that evidence might come too late, in that I’d prefer to err on the side of caution and not have my worst fears of a theocratic state come true.

      9. No one should have Kosher anyway.  Have you seen the way those unfortunate animals must be killed?  Horrible and so very cruel.

      10. Couldn’t disagree more.  Kosher slaughter is humane.  If I were going to be executed I’d certainly rather have my main artery to my brain slit quickly with a sharp knife than be subjected to electrocution, gas or phenobarbital cocktail, or a bullet to my head or heart.   Unfortunately they don’t offer schechting (kosher killing by slitting the main artery to the brain) to death row prisoners… but fortunately I’m not on death row.

      11. The Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, is also LDS.  I haven’t seen him convert/influence/manipulate anything in favor for the LDS Church.

      12. The Senate Majority Leader, Harry Reid, is also LDS.  I haven’t seen him convert/influence/manipulate anything in favor for the LDS Church.

      13. The Mormon church has over 13.8 million members…that’s pretty big. A bit less than that other cult conspiracy, the gays at 15 million±.

      14. The Mormon church has over 13.8 million members…that’s pretty big. A bit less than that other cult conspiracy, the gays at 15 million±.

      15. Well there goes the end timers and the Christian right! Can you start a website and maybe get done PAC money cause you know I think you are having a prophecy yourself!!

    1. More importantly, did he make it home from Canada alive? “Run away” is often a euphemism for “put to sleep” when a parent doesn’t want to tell a child that he or she has “disposed of” an unwanted pet. I’ll bet Romney didn’t want a repeat of the trip to Ontario and made sure Seamus wasn’t there to need a ride back home. If so, this says an enormous amount about Romney and really the American electorate should know it if that is what happened.

  2. My dog says hurrah for Seamus, and hopes that he lived a LONG HAPPY LIFE with the Vietnam protesters in Canada!!!!  I have to agree with my dog, and Seamus!   Please, if he did this to his dog, imagine what he will do with the citizens of America….. Sandra Sullivan Rosen

      1. Thanks for your thoughtful contribution, hating guy.  Shouldn’t you be attending a Tea Party rally or something?

  3. What is amazing is that this 29 year old supposed incident is the worst thing Romney ever did. This is a wrapped-too-tight guy who probably never spit on the sidewalk. He doesn’t drink, smoke, lose his temper, do drugs or fail to match his belt to his shoes and we are chasing “tales” of how he treated his dog in the early 1980s. Really? In the mean time we have people in the race who did coke, cheated on their wives and God knows what else. Whether you like MR or not, he is not exactly a super-villain.

    1. He IS a supervillain. Ask him about home foreclosures in Florida. Ask him about tax havens in the Cayman islands. Ask him about his failure to accurately report his income or pay taxes on it. Ask him about the companies he took over and gutted, and the thousands who lost their jobs. Ask him about his reputation on Wall Street (there are brokers who will not do business with him because of it). Ask him about his stance on women’s rights. Ask him about the White Horse Prophecy of the Mormons.

And he does lose his temper. He’s done it whenever anyone tries to speak up and oppose him.

      1. I thought to respond to your statements – why bother. You are all about lies and political slander and will say anything to support your political party.  One thing the Book of Mormon teaches is for each individual to pray, in faith, to learn the truth for themself.   You beltway cats  will never succeed in outlawing the God of this Land.

    2. Not a villain. No he just bought companies, borrowed against their assets, paid himself millions or dollars and then put those companies into bankruptcy, leaving the employees without jobs and the suppliers with unpaid bills.

And he thought it was okay to strap a dog to the roof of the car for a trip.

He has no empathy. Not for companies, not for employees, not for dogs.

The guy is a selfish opportunist with no heart.

In my book that makes him a super-villain.

    3. It’s an indication of how clueless he is to the suffering of a creature he deems to be inferior to himself.   It matters cause this thoughtless twerp wants to be our president.  He doesn’t care about poor dogs or poor people.

    4. Exactly.  They can’t find any real dirt on him, so this is the best they can do?  They wanted to take their dog on vacation with him (and even built a windshield for the dog)….the dog goes poo (never heard of a dog do that before), and the dog ends up living a long life.  Scandalous!

      1. You assume the dog lived a long life. You don’t know because no one who was there has verified the story.

    5. Of all the things I’ve read that Romney has done that I find offensive, the WORST was him thinking that a woman should listen to him instead of her doctor and telling her to risk her life in childbirth even though a licensed physician told her it was very risky. Romney has shown in numerous incidents that he does not value women as human beings. Obviously, he doesn’t value animals either. AND he’s got no connection with the average citizen of America. He’d be an absolutely dreadful choice for President.

  4. Seamus Romney had a peaceful life and later went to live with Mitt’s sister until he died.
Boston Globe recap: “Sometime during a 12-hour drive from Boston to Canada in 1983, Mitt’s oldest son, Tagg, noticed a brown liquid running down the rear window of the family station wagon. Realizing the liquid was being discharged by their dog, Mitt pulled off the highway and into a gas station, borrowed a hose to wash down Seamus and the car, and then returned the dog to his rooftop carrier for the duration of the trip. Most media reports have accurately relayed those basics. However, exaggerations and faulty assumptions have been advanced, most notably by New York Times columnist Gail Collins, who has trotted out the ghost of poor Seamus in more than 30 of her pieces since 2007.”

    1. OK, I tracked down the Neil Swidey piece from the 8 Jan. 2012 Boston Globe that you quote. Interesting piece (Swidey is the guy who first “broke” the Seamus story back in 2007), and it even has a picture of Seamus, but it says nothing about Seamus leading “a peaceful life” or going on to live with Mitt’s sister. Where did you hear this? And why did Seamus leave the bosom of Mitt’s family to go live with his sister?

      1. It’s in the picture of  Seamus and the cats. He was allow to roam on a ranch in Califoria with Mitt Romney’s sister. Before that he keep getting  pick up by the dog warden because he is a roamer. I had a dog that was like that.

      2. First of all,  I imagine they just couldn’t afford a fenced area for the dog.  Ok.  We  once had an Irish Setter.  Beautiful, but kind of whacky!  Can imagine that a wide-roaming setting might be a happier environment for him.  Even so, can’t imagine this sort of transport could be anything but terrifying for him.  I think aeb. diarrhea!  Don’t know why they couldn’t come up with something more humane.  They probably could have scraped the money together somehow.

      3. My dogs ride inside my car when we go on vacation. In fact, it might even be legal animal abuse to try and transport an animal on the top of your car. (Might not — I’ve never had the need to find out for sure.)

      4. It’s in the picture of  Seamus and the cats. He was allow to roam on a ranch in Califoria with Mitt Romney’s sister. Before that he keep getting  pick up by the dog warden because he is a roamer. I had a dog that was like that.

  5. Thank goodness that poor animal escaped! I wonder if any of Mint RMONEY’s neighbours in Ontario took the poor dog in. Irish setters are sweet, silly animals, very loving and gentle, and that swine RMONEY had no excuse to treat that poor animal so badly.

  6. Man, just think if this animal hater were to become POTUS:  we’d have dogs falling from the sky, after Mitt made them ride on the wings of Air force One.

    Yikes!

    1. There is some linguistic force to this argument.  Does anyone know where the phrase “raining cats and dogs” comes from?

  7. To most people the right way is obvious: strap the luggage to the roof and let the dog ride with the kids. That this obvious solution did not occur to Romney shows how he automatically values his stuff more than the well being of those who can’t fight back. Not all the wealthy are like this but it is depressingly common and bad news for all of us when they have too much influence over our politics and culture.

    1. Ha! Well you know Mitt did state that he thought Seamus preferred being up there! And when diarrhea ensued he must have very pleased with his decision! Why connect the two? Clearly the dog would have demanded for rest stops!
It is so good being right!

    2. a good rule of thumb is to pay attention to the clues  before making a decision,,,clue # one Mitt is clueless when it comes to “common sense”,,of course he is not of the common people he has made that clear.

  8. So only 74 of the approximately 598 words in this story actually pertain to any new information.  That’s 88% of this story that’s just a needless rehash and retelling of the old  Seamus story.  I have no desire to carry water for Romney, but I would like to see a story like this focus on what is new instead of pumping up a piece to seven times the size it needs to be based on the information you actually have that is new.

We get one sentence on the tip and no details.  That might be where you want to focus some journalistic effort.

  11. And nannies like sleeping in the kids playroom and chauffeurs like sitting outside in the cold for hours while their wealthy employers shop or entertain themselves.  the point is that the Romney’s of the world really don’t care whether their dogs or their servants or anybody lesser than them is enjoying themselves- as long as they are.

  12. Here’s a fact of which most of my fellow-commenters seem to be unaware. Mr. and Mrs. Romney own an entire stable full of dressage horses. Each of those horses costs $100,000 per year in food, shelter, exercise, and medical care. That is TWO-AND-A-HALF TIMES what the average American family of four must live on. Most important point: Mr. Romney’s HORSES have health care — something he does not wish to provide to his fellow Americans.

    1. The American Quarter Horse Association reports that the average horse owner spend $5,000.00 per year on their horse.   I doubt the accuracy of your figure, evne if there were some very expensive training going on.

      1. Comparing an American Quarter Horse to a dressage horse is like comparing a family mini-van to a ferrari. Most dressage horses are European-bred with ridiculous bloodlines. Purchasing and importing the horse alone can cost tens of thousands. Upkeep for these horses, especially if they’re on the show circuit often can have a hefty price tag. The whole business is expensive. I don’t doubt thepoliticalcat’s figures for one second.

    2.  And we’re supposed to be persuading by someone who thinks we should be treated like horses?

Keep your saddle off my back—and your hands off my wallet—and I’ll pay my own doctor bills.

    3. So you think the Romney’s love animals and take care of them right!
Seamus must have had it good too! Healthcare and all!
The people of Mass have Masscare move there.

  13. he “got up there all on his own” because he couldn’t STAND to ride IN the car with him…..GO SEAMUS! HOpe you are free in Canada!

  14. How many of you strap YOUR family pets to the roof of your cars and drive for 12 hours.

    NO ONE.

You do not do that.  You will not do that.  You wouldn’t even consider it.

But look who’s running for President.  His disconnects are on literally everything. He follows a religion a well-documented charlatan made up in the 19th century.  He made a $10,000 bet on national TV. He has absolutely no inability to understand why having a Cayman Islands account for tax sheltering his money is offensive to the majority of Americans.  He was for universal health care and now he’s totally against it.  His list of disconnects is endless.

He’s the perfect candidate for the GOP.  The absolutely perfect candidate.  I can’t understand why the entire Republican base isn’t 100% behind this man.

  15. My kids liked hanging out on top of the car, too.  But this was just to the end of the street, and at two miles an hour.

As soon as you hit the highway, all living beings, including the family snake, are in a cage and inside.  (Well, the dog is allowed to stick her nose out the window, but the window is only open two inches.)  The fracking fancy clothes can be strapped to the roof.  (Although we did lose a suitcase once.  We never let dad live that one down.  “Strapped down, huh?”)

Romney, like all repukelibaggers, is a sociopath, with no interest in anything except himself.  All teabaglicans will tell ANY lie to make themselves look important — because they know, to the core of themselves, that they are not just insane, but inferior.

It’s called narcissitic disorder, a form of paranoid schizophrenia.  The only reason there even ARE any repugnantbaggers is because nobody is supervising their medication.

Who gives a rat’s carcass which is the repugnantbagger nominee?  They should all be put back in the insane asylums that Ronnie Ray-gun closed (while picking his dog up by the ears), and everyone who votes for them should be Baker-acted too.  There is just something basically WRONG with people who want to control other people’s private lives, and then vote against their own well-being.

Romney is trash.  Leave your dog behind? !?  LEAVE YOUR DOG BEHIND?  Guess who else that piece of garbage would “leave behind”?

But the rest of the sociopaths are even worse, and even crazier.  “Oh, ball players and talk-show lip-flappers need tax handouts, but the kids hauling the stock into the stores at two in the morning don’t need food or medical aid.”

    Insane.  Flatly, literally, insane.

      1. Rebuttal to what? In the business, this is called a crazy ass-head’s tirade. You don’t rebut them, you wonder when the asylum got internet.

      2. Hmm, that person got 29 likes and your stupid fact lacking attacking “analysis”  merited 3.  The Die Hard made solid points about the total lack of compassion and what was behind it.   You resorted to insults.  My suggestion would be to look at your comments and then look in the mirror.

  16. DOES IT GET ANY SILLIER THAN THIS.  This happened in 1983.  NINETEEN EIGHTY-THREE.  This story, the Westminster protest where reporters outnumbers protestors,  “multiple requests for comment on this story” and Obama Campaign head making up funny names about defication and attributing it to “Romney” (Axelrod has no class) is the height of silliness.

    1. If I murdered someone ing 1983, that would not be relivant now, right?  What if I lied on my taxes?  What if I cheated on my wife (wives)?  What if I abused animals?  Would that lend you insight into my soul, if I abuse animals 28 years ago, and people last year?  Would that affect you?  No.  It would not.

    3. There are reading classes that you need to take, axe. Gingrich made the name. But you can’t read yet, so just say you’re sorry.

  17. “However, based on what Mr. Romney’s sons allegedly told reporters about
Seamus going on the lam in Canada, Seamus didn’t like being strapped to
the car enough to stick around for the return trip”

How lame is that?  Ask Caesar Milan and he would tell you that animals, dogs do not have people-like feelings not matter how much pampering urban pet owners  would like to tell it.

The dog got lost.  The Romney boys gullible and too trusting of the dem operatives they call journalists.  There is no “off the record” for GOP but they would kill or take a bullet for a dem candidate.

Same dog story and Clinton would have been praised for his kindness in cleaning the poor dogs kennel in public rather than making him ride in his filth.  The windshield gives the lie to the wind blowing on the dog.  If Clinton it would be the hands on person who couldn’t bear to leave the family pet behind so he planned a way and drove slow for the dogs sake?  Or whatever spin they could schmooz their silly  leftie city folk.

    1. Agreed!  In fact I saw a Fox News report where Seamus stated how he love bring strapped to the top of a car at 60 MPG, being hosed down when he crapped himself.  “12 hours was not enough” he said.  Oh, and Seamus mentioned how much he would have hated to be a Clinton Dog.

      Grow up Lillith.

  18. Hey it was either the dog or Romney wife that had to ride on top of the car roof because there was no room in the car.And since the dog couldn’t speak up and object, the dog lost to Romney’s wife! Flag Edit ReplyReply

  19. Seamus, Romney’s beloved family dog, lived to be a ripe old age. Sleeping on his master’s bed and visiting around town with his dog friends. Getting picked up by the dog warden because he was a clever dog and snuck out. They say he was Mr. Dog personality wise and enjoyed life. Now what’s the beef that Romney had five children who had to ride in the car and the dog had a special carrier on the top? That’s more like a real person with kids and a family man going on vacation…It’s time for liberals, Peat and embittered Conservative opportunists like Newt to give it up on the Seamus Dog story.  If Seamus could have talked, he would have said Life was great. The Romney family loves children and animals especially dogs. Seamus had nothing to complain about.

      1. You should have been so lucky to live the life of Seamus. He had it good.
The word sleaziest is reserved for the policies of Democrats

  20. This clearly is animal cruelty.  Reveals just about everything there is to know about his character, as far as I’m concerned.

    1. chill out…Seamus like they said would ‘hop up into the cage’…no dog would do that if it were an adverse experience…ever own a dog before?

      1. Oh yes.  I have owned a dog before.  Now am involved with dog rescue, and this must have been one that slipped through the cracks.  I had trouble sleeping last night, this story is so disturbing.

      2. Sure, and I bet the kids would enjoy riding on the roof of the car if you would let them.  But you don’t.  Why?  BECAUSE IT’S DANGEROUS!!

      3. “Seamus like they said would ‘hop up into the cage’…no dog would do
that if it were an adverse experience…ever own a dog before?”

Wow, and you believe it? btw, I have 3 dogs, lab, labradoodlepyrennean mountain dog.

      4. I’m wondering:  How does a dog hop on to the roof of a car?  Even a bigger dog, like a Great Dane would have trouble doing this.  Was the proess of being lifted into that cage so uncomfortable that the dog became capable of leaping on top of a station wagon, which is something that wouldn’t be natural for him to do it?

  21. So if the dog didn’t run away in Canada….how did he get back to Boston?  Another rooftop trip?  It may be an old story but it’s how little regard he had for something outside of himself….even the whole “I’m not stopping except for gas”  = “I don’t care what anyone else’s needs are because I want to be in charge”

Compassion for those whom you are leading  is what separates a true leader that people want to follow from a dictator who demands to be followed.

Seriously, the Romney’s had money even back in ’83.  Why not rent a small trailer or rooftop carrier for the luggage, perhaps drive two cars because of having a such a large family,  or let the dog stay with friends/relatives/kennel while they jaunted off to yet another family house.

  22. Poor dog was probably so terrified when that carrier door opened  he was like a shot from a gun My question is if he passed a cop  during that trip WHY was he not arrested /jailed

  23. Funny, I searched for a car large enough for my family & my dog to fit comfortably inside. I have a newfoundland. I would never subject my dog to this. She is part of my family. I suppose he got a dog for a ” reason” instead of companionship & love. Romney, you are a world class heartless bastard.

  24. Romney claims the dog carrier was “air tight.” An animal couldn’t breathe if it was air tight. As we know, dog poop ran out, so it wasn’t air tight. It was windy and loud. Romney claims the dog “scrambled up there” all “by himself.” How does a dog scramble up a car and onto the roof all by himself? Was he de-clawed?

  25. Did the dog run away in Canada?

Isn’t it more likely that Romney abandoned the dog in Canada rather than have to hose his car off on the return trip?

  26. Would Romney strap our poor, disabled and elderly to the roof of  Airforce 1?  No doubt.  You don’t get as rich as he is by being compassionate.  Look where his money came from, hostile take-overs that cost people their livelyhoods.

  27. I want a president who has and is loved by his german shepherd dog.  Then we know he’s a good man or woman.  Because shepherds can take the measure of a man….

  28. I had a 110 pound Irish Setter who used to ride in the bed of my pick-up every time we went somewhere unless it was below 50 or was raining.   He would jump in there every time he  got near the truck.   He knew it meant we were going  for a ride somewhere; to the beach or a lake or the woods.

He anticipated getting out the entire way there…………so when that tailgate went down and he was untethered guess what he did………………he bolted.   He  had a couple accidents too.  Setters are high energy and very exhitable and have accidents under all conditions.

I hate cruelty to animals,  this incident is far from it.  How far do you take this.  A family member is late getting home and Fido has an accident…..Is that cruelty?  Everybody reading this has made mistakes in caring/raising pets.  That doesn’t make them cruel or unfit.

I’m not a Romney supporter at all, but this is politics and only politics.   Interesting  how Clinton and Obama never had dogs until they got to the White House.

Even more interesting is how much animal lovers are sickened by this but when the killing of a viable and fully formed fetus is
brought up these same compassioned folks cop to “It’s a choice” and they never bat an eye.

  29. This is the man to fix this countries problems ? A man who straps a dog to the roof of his station wagon for a 12 HOUR TRIP ! Man if we don’t have problems now “We ain’t seen nothing yet “. This is animal abuse. Next maybe we can nominate a child abuser in too.

  31. Too bad the dog didn’t commandeer the vehicle and leave Mitt in Canada!  Or anywhere else that will tolerate his BS!  He is even more arrogant than his daddy, George.

  32. I saw a guy today with a dog in the back of his pick up truck. He actually had room in the cab but the dog was outside of the truck in the bed portion!!! it was cold out..like 60 and misty…I just cant believe people would do such a horrible thing. I was about to ride up next to him and yell at him for his insensitivity!! horrible!

  33. Sure Romney I bet Seamus just loved that trip. I mean, a wind screen surely made ole Seamus as snug as a bug in a rug.  Just like the chickens you see being hauled in open air cages on 18 wheeler tractor trailers. They always have a windshield at the front end of the trailer so only the sides and rear are open. Plus the advantage of the wind drafting off the tractor itself is enough to suck a small car into it’s vortex. So if ole Seamus had even half the wind break on top of that car as tractor trailers provide their cargo then I have no doubt he loved the trip. I’ll bet just like  the chickens  in the cages on the 18 wheelers going 65 mph down the interstate, Seamus was stretched out sound asleep. It just doesn’t get anymore peaceful than that for our furry feathered friends.

  34. I love what Dave Letterman said about Romney a couple of weeks ago.  He said if you were checking out of a hotel and had a dispute with them over your bill,  Romney looks like  the guy who comes in from a door in back to handle the “problem”.  LMAO

  35. In addition to the treatment of the dog, ask yourself this.  Bbefore the trip started, Romney pointed out that they’d “be making predetermined stops for gas, and that was it”.  You’ve got 6 people in the car who probably all suffered for at least 6 hours.  If he left Boston on the Interstate, then he’d still have gas when he hit the 300 mile mark.  Figure 45-55 miles per hour and you’ve got far too long for everyone “to hold it”.  The really stupid question to ask is why not put the luggage on the roof and the dog inside?  Also, if they were on vacation–what was the rush?   When I traveled with my dog, we stoopped every 2-3 hours and I let her stretch her legs, as she’d been either asleep in the back seat, or with her head out the window.  I too benefitted from the breaks.  When traveling alone–I was far more often in too much of a hurry and stopped only about every 6 hours for gas.  It was hard on me and I had control over the situation.  None of the other Romeny family members (including Seamus ), did.
