Governor Cuomo (Photo: Getty)

Governor Andrew Cuomo's 2014 campaign committee reported today that it raised over $6 million and spending $1 million over the last six months, leaving the campaign with over $14 million in the bank. Needless to say, that is a huge amount of money to have for an election that is close to three years away.

Governor Cuomo's biggest expenditures look to be composed of polling, media and consulting services, although they range from everything from car rentals to a $10,000 contribution to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.

New York Public Interest Research Group's Bill Mahoney noted that Governor Cuomo's campaign finances represent a marked change from former Governor Eliot Spitzer one year into his term. Over all of the last year, Mr. Cuomo has raised nearly twice as much as Mr. Spitzer and spent only about $2 million to Mr. Spitzer's $9 million. Additionally, Governor Cuomo's $14 million is far more cash on hand for future spending than the $3 million former Governor Spitzer had at this point.

This large of a fundraising haul --when no election is taking place-- will escalate perceptions that he's capable of handling the financial rigors of a future national presidential campaign. It will also enable the Governor to freely spend to promote his agenda with media buys, should the legislature prove intractable on issues he considers critical.

It's unlikely that Governor Cuomo will need to spend any of that money to boost his personal poll numbers any time soon, as a recent poll handed him a 73% approval rating.
