Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is widely rumored to be prepping a run for mayor in 2013, but recent reports also have him eyeing the comptroller's office. After his press conference about the Department of Education's failure to collect federal Medicaid reimbursements today, Mr. Stringer told The Politicker he's focused on running for mayor and expects to make his intentions clear quite soon. "As time goes on in the next few weeks, as we start to do more, I think it will very clear to people that we are going to be a very serious candidate for Mayor of New York," Mr. Stringer said.

Currently, John Liu occupies the city comptroller's office, but Mr. Liu may leave a vacancy if he leaves to start his own mayoral campaign or if he's forced to step down due to the ongoing scandal over his fundraising. Mr. Stringer said he's flattered people think he'd be a good replacement for Mr. Liu and pointed out that those same qualifications would make him an even better candidate for mayor.

"Everything that we have focused on politically has been about the mayor's race, obviously I havent declared for any office but im very- the fact that people think I would do well as City Comptroller is obviously a great compliment. If you know the buck than you know--than you probably would do a better job at City Hall," said Mr. Stringer.

Though he's glad people think he's qualified to be comptroller, Mr. Stringer assured us he remains focused on running for mayor.

"Right now theres no vacancy for comptroller. We have a comptroller," Mr. Stringer said. "There's going to be an open race for mayor and that has been my focus as relates to my political plans."
