Outgoing and outspoken Massachusetts Rep. Barney Frank appeared on the SiriusXM OutQ radio network and explained why he was able to withstand his own major scandal but New York’s own Anthony Weiner was not.
In case you need a refresher, in 1989 it was discovered that Mr. Frank was having a relationship with a male prostitute, who it turned out, was using Mr. Frank’s home for his liaisons.
“[Mr. Weiner's] problem was he lied about it and attacked the press, when I had this hustler come forward and talk about what I’d done,” Mr. Frank said. “He did what is often the case: He said some things that were true, some things that were wildly untrue.”
Mr. Frank may have forgotten, but mostly Mr. Weiner said things that were untrue. He originally said the picture that went ’round the Internet of his crotch was a prank administered by a hacker; then he said that he had spoken about it enough; then he said he couldn’t say “with certitude” (maybe the phrase of the year, btw) if the crotch was his own.
Mr. Frank recalled however that “As soon as [the prostitute] said he was going to the press I had a press conference and admitted everything. …In Weiner’s case, he lied about it and attacked the press for asking about it. In my case, this it was a male adult whom I had paid for sex. It was entirely consensual. In Weiner’s case, what finally brought him down, was the unfortunate revelation that he had been texting with a minor.”
Again, not entirely sure Mr. Frank is right on his analysis here. Although the texting with the minor was the final straw, it was really the accumulation of incidents which hurt Mr. Weiner, plus the fact that his own party really wanted him gone.
