Mel Wymore registered to run in the race to replace retiring Councilwoman Gale Brewer in District 6 on the Upper West Side. Mr. Wymore was born as a woman and, if his City Council bid succeeds, he would become New York City’s first transgender elected official.

“I have always been open and honest about who I am, and I believe that everyone should feel free to be their authentic self,” Mr. Wymore said as he announced his intention to run.

Mr. Wymore was recently the chairman of Community Board 7 on the Upper West Side. He has lived in the area for more than twenty years. In his announcement, Mr. Wymore described his Council campaign as “a natural progression of decades of activism on the Upper West Side.”

“I’m excited to continue serving our community, fostering collaboration, and producing tangible results,” Mr. Wymore said.

In a 2009 profile in the Columbia Spectator, Mr. Wymore described himself as concerned with many of the forces shaping the Upper West Side.

“What do we want our lives to look like in the urban environment? There is a lot of talk about sustainability, overcrowding of schools, overdevelopment, the rich-poor gap, small businesses going out of business, large businesses coming in, transportation congestion. No single one of them represents an earth-shattering crisis. But put together, there are a lot of shifts that are occurring,” Mr. Wymore said.
