Councilwoman Tish James and Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer got on stage and shook what their respective mothers gave them at last Friday’s “Stars of New York Dance” benefit. Their performances were every bit as awkward and wonderful as you might imagine and, thankfully, videocameras were on hand to capture the improbable pair of political dancers for posterity.

“Stars of New York Dance” is an annual scholarship fundraiser for dance students. The evening’s main event is a competition modeled after the reality TV hit “Dancing With the Stars.” Borough President Stringer and Councilwoman James didn’t officially enter the dance-off, but they still took the stage to strut their stuff.

Councilwoman James led a team that danced to the tune of Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.” Despite her high heels, Councilwoman James performed a surprisingly impressive routine complete with hip slapping and booty shaking. Borough President Stringer was decidedly more awkward as he danced with a partner to Alicia Key’s New York anthem “Empire State of Mind.”

Watch the full video of Councilwoman James and Borough President Stringer doing their thing on stage below. The portion with the politicians begins at about 2:13.
