A piece in The New York Times this morning detailed how the Brooklyn Assemblyman has raised over $170,000 and reports him describing the incumbent, Ed Towns, as someone who "has had 29 years to make a difference. At this point, it’s time to move in another direction.”

This morning a source close to Mr. Jeffries revealed that his most recent filing will show that his $170,000 will come from 424 contributions of which 50% - 212 - are $100 or less.

It will be interesting to see how much money Mr. Towns has on hand. Doubtlessly Mr. Jeffries would prefer that his money and his level of support convince Mr. Towns to not seek another term. As The Times piece notes, Mr. Towns has had a rough go of it over the past couple of years, losing his post as the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, losing a race for district leader and watching his daughter get crushed in an Assembly race for a seat formerly held by his son, in a race that was widely thought to be a bellweather for the rest of the district.

That race was won by Rafael Espinal, a young City Council staffer close to Brooklyn Democratic Party boss Vito Lopez. And you know who is also close to Mr Lopez? Hakeem Jeffries.
