Massachusetts Democratic Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren says she “created much of the intellectual foundation” for Occupy Wall Street in a new interview with The Daily Beast. In the interview, Ms. Warren, whose many conservative critics say she advocates “class warfare,” also describes how she used to be a Republican. 

Ms. Warren became a viral video sensation earlier this month with a clip calling for “fair taxation” of the wealthy.

“I created much of the intellectual foundation for what they do. … I support what they do,” Ms. Warren said of Occupy Wall Street.

Ms. Warren also told The Daily Beast about her Republican roots.

“I was a Republican because I thought that those were the people who best supported markets. I think that is not true anymore. … I was a Republican at a time when I felt like there was a problem that the markets were under a lot more strain. It worried me whether or not the government played too activist a role,” Ms. Warren said.

Ms. Warren, who is a 62 year-old former Harvard Law professor, said her affiliation with the G.O.P. ended after what The Daily Beast describes as a “political awakening” in 1995.

Last week, Ms. Warren came to New York to have an Upper East Side fundraiser for her Senate campaign. The event was hosted by Attorney General Eric Schneiderman and billionaire George Soros, among others.
