Hakeem Jeffries Inches Closer Toward a Congressional Run

Brooklyn Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries has filed a campaign committee with the Federal Election Commission.

Mr. Jeffries has been signalling that he may challenge longtime Congressman Ed Towns for months now, after opening a Congressional Exploratory Committee in May.

Mr. Jeffries has long been thought to have his eye on the Congressional seat, but running for it would mean giving up his safe Assembly seat. His hopes could have gotten a boost however in September when Mr. Towns’ daughter, Deidra went down to a lopsided defeat to in a special election for an Assembly seat that previously belonged to Mr. Towns’ son, Darryl.

Mr. Jeffries could still take a pass–and will likely wait until the district lines are drawn to decide one way or the other–but this step means that his fundraising efforts have begun in earnest.
