The senior senator had been vacationing in Europe during the worst of Hurricane Irene, leading to an eerie silence from one of the more microphone friendly local pols.
But Chuck Schumer announced his return today with a press conference calling on Americans to take out their American flags for the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and pin them to their jacks, hang them from windows and affix them to automobiles.
“Displaying the American flag on the 10th Anniversary of 9/11 will make good on our promise to never forget those we lost on that fateful day, and will send a powerful message of ongoing national unity and resolve,” said Schumer. “Even if you are unable to attend a 9/11 memorial event on the 10th anniversary of the attacks, you can take part in a national tribute by joining fellow Americans and displaying the flag that day,”
If there is an interesting political note in all this, it is worth recalling that in 2007, back when he was a candidate for president, Barack Obama came under considerable criticism for not wearing the flag on his suit lapel.
