Belzer, Bratton Boost Aborn Gun Initiative

Former NYPD commissioner Bill Bratton and Richard Belzer–whose law enforcement bonafides include a stint on “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit”–have cut a new YouTube ad today calling on Congress to back a ban on large capacity ammunition magazines.

The initiative is part of the Citizens Crime Commission and is trying to make the case that high capacity clips are public safety threat, since they can leave the police outgunned.

“Both Richard Belzer and Bill Bratton understand that sensible gun control protects the public and the people who put their lives on the line to defend and serve it: law enforcement,” said Richard Aborn, president of the Citizens Crime Commission. “Thanks to their outspoken commitment to common sense policies, together with ongoing support from law enforcement, it is becoming increasingly difficult for Congress to ignore. We are extremely grateful for their support.”

Bratton has been toying with running for mayor, and Aborn, who ran for Manhattan D.A. and lost in 2009, has been mentioned as a possible candidate in the future. And considering that both Alec Baldwin and Kelsey Grammer say they want to run for mayor of New York City, we expect Belzer to announce his Public Advocate campaign any day now.

    Lets see… if 10 round mags are banned and 9 round mags are OK… the cops are 10% safer! OK… I get it!!! Next we work on the other 9 right???

    I’m a retired Police and SWAT Officer,  I have a son who is a NY State Trooper.   Both of us don’t agree with the magazine ban.  History has shown it to be ineffective and actually a small part of criminal use.   The ban would be another assault upon the rights of free law abiding citizens.   It has become the easy feel good approach to restrict the law abiding while ignoring the criminal.  Thus:  It is easier to herd sheep, then it is to herd wolves.    Gun laws should be written and enforced like DWI laws.   Go after the offender, punish the offender and secure the freedom of the law abiding citizen.

    Lets enforce the laws we have now and not try to outlaw the law abiding.

    as avid sport shooter i dis like the mag laws on so many levels . am a proud lawful tax paying  upstate new yorker and       dont want to be made into the bad guy ! so some elite can have a false sence of safety. while we lose are rights

    I notice this as is about “Cops vs. Criminals”.  What about the millions of law abiding gun owners who don’t want to do anything but protect themselves and their families.  Hi cap mag bans have never worked.  If you want to keep both cops and the public safe, try putting the bad guys where they belong… behind bars
