The endorsement would represent a considerable coup for the Weprin campaign. Earlier this week his Republican opponent, Bob Turner, was endorsed by former Mayor Ed Koch, who said that voters should elect Turner to send a message to President Obama over his Israel policy.
Lieberman is, like Weprin, an Orthodox Jew, and one of the Senate’s more hawkish members over Israel policy. Lieberman is also an independent, and so can provide some bi-partisan cover for Weprin after Koch, a Democrat, endorsed Turner.
The endorsement is slated to take place in Washington D.C.
Turner campaign spokesman William O’Reilly sent (unsolicited) along the following to push back on the significance of the Lieberman nod:
“This is an endorsement to be expected. It is a Democrat endorsing a Democrat. The reason why the Koch endorsement is so powerful is that the mayor is crossing party lines to send a message to President Obama on Israel. We will do everything we can to make sure that message is heard loudly and clearly.”
