Grimm is Golden: Frosh Congressman Raises Big Bucks

Staten Island Congressman Michael Grimm raised over $350,000 in the last campaign finance period, according to disclosure reports posted online over the weekend.

To put it in perspective, Congresswoman Nan Hayworth, who, like Grimm is a freshman swept into office in a swing district, announced last week that she brought in $381,024 over a similar period, a figure high enough that it was credited with convincing former Congressman John Hall to take a pass on a run.

Grimm now has over $400,000 on hand, even if he doesn’t yet have an opponent. Former Congressman Mike McMahon, whom Grimm defeated in 2010, has been encouraged to try for a re-match, and investment banker Robert Diamond is also said to be considering a run. Neither have begun fundraising.

Among some of the high-profile names that have given to Grimm include PR maven Ronn Torossian, supermarket mogul John Catsimatidis and GOP Staten Island chairman Robert Scamardella.

Interesting this Grimm seems to be emerging as a political player nationally.  The guy is smart and good looking and was in the FBI – He could keep rising.  WIth backers like Gristedes man Catsiamatidis and a big shot PR guy like Ronn Torossian than Grimm may have a future nationally as a bigger player.
