Chuck Schumer just sent out a statement saying that Congressman Anthony Weiner “did the right thing” by responding publicly to reports that he sent lewd messages to women across the country.
“I am deeply pained and saddened by today’s news,” Schumer says. “By fully explaining himself, apologizing to all he hurt and taking full responsibility for his wrongful actions, Anthony did the right thing. He remains a talented and committed public servant, and I pray he and his family can get through these difficult times.”
Schumer and Weiner go back a long way–the senator was the congressman’s boss back when Schumer served in the House of Representatives, and back when the scandal was first breaking, Schumer said that he was “virtually certain” that his former protege had done nothing wrong.
According to Schumer spokesman Mike Morey, the senator backs Weiner’s decision to not resign.
“Congressman Weiner has said he wishes to continue to serve,” Morey said. “And the senator thinks it should be up to his constituents to decide.”
