Same-sex marriage opponent, Rev. Jason McGuire employs some upstate / downstate rivalry in his interview with Liz Benjamin:
“Mayor Bloomberg can’t buy an election upstate and so, that’s something important to remember. If you’re an upstate Republican, probably the last thing you want is a downstate liberal mayor supporting you.”
Later, McGuire, who has been traveling the state in his Mayday for Marriage tour, makes a clear point about proposed compromises to the bill:

“No amount of amendments to this bill would make it palatable to us,” he said. “The burden of proof is on that community to demonstrate that they are actually contributing something to that society.”
