Disney likes Ike: Eisenhowser in a political advertisement produced by Walt Disney Studios in 1952.Back in the day when commercials were produced on 16mm film, advertising techniques were vastly less sophisticated then they are today. But that didn't stop Presidential hopeful Dwight D. Eisenhower from becoming the first candidate to air campaign ads on television.
Below is his most revered ad of the 1952 campaign, which was produced by Walt Disney Studios and Citizens for Eisenhower-Nixon. It was the only television campaign commercial Disney ever created, and shows an animated Uncle Sam introducing the campaign slogan, “I like Ike.” .
Eisenhower was skeptical about using television, but his opponent, Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson, wouldn’t appear on television at all because he thought it demeaning to a man ascending to the presidency. Instead he let singers do the selling.
Stevenson's commercial sang, "I'd rather have a man with a hole in his shoe than a hole in everything he says."
Eisenhower won.
